About Dr. Yu

Dr. Yu joined SIUE in 2006 and is a Professor of Social Foundations of Education at the Department of Educational Leadership. As a scholar, he is primarily concerned with issues of identity, voice, power, access, and their relationships to schooling. He writes in the areas of moral education, civic and citizenship education, and multicultural and anti-racist education. A commitment to social justice and a cross-cultural perspective guide his work. A recipient of American Educational Studies Association’s Critics Choice Book Award and Visiting Chair Professor at several Chinese universities, he frequently presents at peer reviewed international conferences and gives invited lectures in China and Taiwan.   

Dr. Yu has taught various undergraduate and graduate courses in foundations of education. His courses include: Foundations of Education in a Multicultural Society, Analysis of Educational Issues: Philosophical and Historical Foundations, Analysis of Educational Issues: Socio-Cultural Foundations, Poverty in Education, Diversity in Higher Education, and Politics and Policy-Making in Education. He also teaches qualitative methods and supervises final projects. These courses serve students in multiple programs including Learning, Culture and Society, College Student Personnel Administration, Educational Leadership, and Teaching and Learning.
