The Secondary Education program is a joint effort between the School of Education (SOE) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). Students study their subject area field with faculty in CAS as they also develop an understanding of the broad issues that impact adolescents and schools through courses and field experiences with faculty in the SOE.
The Secondary Teacher Education Program provides students in the first semester of the final year the opportunities to learn the cultures of schools, and the students, teachers, support personnel, and administrators. Students attend seminars in the first semester covering topics such as unit plan development, classroom management strategies, and instructional planning and delivery. During the student teacher semester, students are better prepared to successfully perform the teaching roles because of the support they receive by their cooperating teacher, School of Education faculty, and their respective content area faculty advisor.
Graduates of the Secondary Education Program may work in private or public school settings. Employment opportunities can also be found in international settings as well as military schools.
