Bachelor of Science Degree Program

Overview - Program of Study - Admission - Application to Secondary Education

Overview
The Secondary Education program prepares teachers to teach one or more subjects in grades 6-12 in Illinois.  The program is a joint effort between the School of Education (SOE) and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).  Students study their teaching field with faculty in CAS as they also develop an understanding of the broad issues that impact adolescents and schools through courses and field experiences with faculty in the SOE.  Students pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in a discipline in the CAS, with certification through the SOE.

Program of Study
Teachers in middle schools and high schools must have deep knowledge of the subject areas they teach, as well as of the students and schools in which they work.  During the first two years at SIUE, students complete a variety of general education courses, as well as the study of their intended teaching field. During this time, students are introduced to the field of education through experiences in CI 200, Introduction to Education. During the third and fourth years, students continue work in their teaching field, develop a minor or a 2nd teaching field, and deepen their understanding of professional issues in education through course work and participation in public school classrooms.
