About Dr. Sherwood

Elizabeth Sherwood, Ed. D. is an associate professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education, Health, and Human Services at Southern Illinois University   Edwardsville. She joined SIUE in 2004 after obtaining her Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Illinois State University. Her interests include prekindergarten education, early childhood education history, nature and the young child, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics) education in the early years. She is the co-author of numerous   books in science education for early childhood teachers and was a consultant with the Illinois State Board of Education for the development of Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards in science. She co-chaired the SIUE STEAM Conference for Early Educators in 2014 and 2016.

She has over thirty years of experience as an early childhood educator, served twelve years as a state-funded prekindergarten program coordinator, and has extensive experience in professional   development for early childhood professionals at national, state, and local levels.

Research Profile

Dr. Sherwood’s research focuses on the history of early childhood education and early childhood science education. She was the principal early childhood consultant for a National Science   Foundation grant through the University of Texas-Austin investigating what four-year-old children know and can do in science. She also has several publications that explore teaching practices during the early to mid-twentieth century and their relevance to the work of current educators.
