About Dr. Shadrack G. Msengi

Shadrack G. Msengi is Associate  Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, School of Education, Health, and Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE). Dr. Msengi holds a Bachelor of Education in Linguistics and Literature from the   University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a Masters in TESOL, a Masters in Literacy Education, as well as a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction all from the University of Northern Iowa. He joined SIUE in 2011. Previously Dr. Msengi taught literacy courses at Notre de Namur University, Belmont CA, for over 5 years. At SIUE, he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses including Theoretical Foundations in Literacy, Diagnostic Literacy Practicum for Middle/Secondary Level, Adolescent Content Literacy, Content Area Literacy, Adult Literacy, English Language Learner Content Literacy, Organization and Administration of Literacy Programs and   Introduction to Education.  As a result of his expertise, he created and implemented five new courses including Adolescent Literacy, English Language Learners Content, Literacy Instruction, Independent Research in Reading, Content Literacy for nursing and other programs, and Adult Literacy which is an online course as part of the new Adult Education Program. Dr. Msengi is an active member of six professional literacy organizations including International Literacy Association, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Literacy Research Association, Association of Literacy Educators and Researchers, Illinois   Reading Council, and Lewis and Clark Reading Council. He is a literacy researcher, presenter and has published several peer reviewed research articles and peer reviewed book chapters. He has presented at major state, national, and international conferences   and has been invited as key note speaker.  Dr. Msengi is also a member of the School Community Journal Advisory Board

Research Interest:

Based on his beliefs on social constructivist, Transfer and Transformation of knowledge and practices from literacy clinics to community, Home and School Literacy Connections, Third Space Theory, Funds of Knowlege, Ecological System Theory, Dr. Msengi’s research focus on the value of  reciprocity of teaching and learning, whereby students and teachers collaboratively work and succeed through a shared understanding. His body of research has emphasized that a student’s prior knowledge enables him/her to   connect with academic knowledge through the integration of the receptive and expressive literacy modalities of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and visually representing and strategies to enhance teaching and learning.
