Overview:
The Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Secondary Education is intended for middle school/junior high school, senior high school, and community college teachers, as well as professionals in adult education agencies, who wish to develop deeper knowledge of teaching and learning in the following disciplines:

Art Foreign Language
Biology History
Chemistry Mathematics
Earth & Space Science Physics
English Language Arts

Program of Study:
The Master of Science in Education in Secondary Education is a 36 credit program in which you work closely with a faculty mentor to develop a program of study that meets you personal and professional goals.  The program of study includes:
SOE Core: (9 hours)
EPFR 501 Research Methods
EPFR 515 Advanced Educational Psychology
EPFR 520/521 Foundations of Education

Secondary Education Emphasis: (12 credits)
CI 510 Analysis of Instruction
CI 596 Field Studies - Master’s Project (minimum of 3 credits)
Remaining credits selected with faculty mentor

Teaching Field Emphasis: (15 credits) 
Courses in the teaching field are determined in consultation with a teaching-field advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences.  The courses selected should serve to broaden and/or deepen knowledge of the discipline.

Admission:

You should have:
 • A bachelor’s degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (A=4.0) for the last 2 years of undergraduate work, as well as in the teaching field.

• A valid teaching certificate from an accredited institution.

• Applicants who do not meet these program requirements may be considered for admission; however, some conditions may be applied to that admission.

• Applicants may not enroll in any courses applicable to the graduate degree until they have consulted with the director of the graduate program in secondary education and with the graduate adviser in the teaching field.

Complete and submit

• Graduate Admissions Application (classified) form, which can be obtained from the Student Service Center, or online at www.siue.edu/GRADUATE/application/index.html.  Also submit official transcripts of all college coursework to the Graduate School.

• Curriculum & Instruction Application form, which can be obtained from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Founders Hall, room 1133, 618.650.3082, or online at    http://www.siue.edu/education/ci/graduate/pdf/grad_ap.pdf.

The completed Graduate Admissions Application, the Curriculum & Instruction Application, and transcripts are reviewed by C & I faculty for admission into a graduate program.

Upon notification of acceptance, students should make an appointment to meet with their assigned faculty mentor to plan a program of study.

Applicants may not enroll in any courses applicable to the graduate degree until they have consulted with the director of the graduate program in secondary education and with the graduate adviser in the teaching field.

SIUE allows you six years from the date of the first courses (transferred or at SIUE) to complete your degree.
