Admission Requirements

Students seeking admission to the Literacy Education Program must meet the following admission requirements:

  • a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher (A=4.0) during at least the last two years and a minimum of a 3.0 in any graduate course work;
  • a valid Illinois teaching license and a minimum of two years of contracted teaching prior to enrolling in CI 571;
  • successful completion of the course in Children’s Literature at the undergraduate or graduate level prior to graduation;

Complete and submit:

The completed Graduate Admission Application, the Curriculum & Instruction Application, and transcripts are reviewed by the Literacy Program Director for admission into the graduate program.

Upon notification of acceptance, students should make an appointment to meet with the assigned faculty mentor to plan a program of study.

Students may enroll in up to 9 hours of graduate credit as an unclassified graduate student. These credits may be transferred into a graduate program by completing a Graduate Student Request Form. Before taking unclassified credit hours you should consult with the Literacy Program Director.

SIUE allows six years from the date of the first courses (transferred or at SIUE) to complete the degree.
 

Exit Requirements

Candidates must earn an A or B in all courses, complete all program assessments, pass required state exams, and master’s degree candidates must complete an approved literacy research project.

This program is open to enrollment at any time during the school year. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the Department of Curriculum and Instruction or Angie White as soon as possible to begin the application process.
