Master of Science Education DegreeOverview
Welcome to the SIUE Master of Science in Education, Elementary and Early Childhood Programs web site. Our purpose is to provide you with the requirements for admission to the Elementary Education or Early Child Programs and to familiarize you with the faculty and staff of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers a program leading to the Master of Science in Education (MS in Ed) degree with a major in elementary education. Within this program, students are offered a choice from two areas of study: general elementary education and early childhood education.
The general elementary education area is intended to provide advanced preparation and to improve the instructional effectiveness of elementary classroom teachers. The early childhood education area is for professionals who are pursuing teaching and other early childhood careers.

b. School of Education/Curriculum and Instruction Application form, which can be obtained from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Founders Hall, Room 1133, 618.650.3082, or online at http://www.siue.edu/education/ci/graduate/pdf/grad_ap.pdf.

How do I know when I have been admitted into the Elementary Education or Early Childhood areas of study?
A copy of the completed Graduate Admissions Application and transcripts are forwarded to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, where the application, and transcripts are reviewed for admittance into the Masters Program. Upon acceptance, an approval form is signed and sent to the Graduate School and a C&I advisor is assigned. The student will be notified that their acceptance is approved from the Graduate School and a letter from C&I containing advisor information.
What happens once I am admitted into the program?
The graduate student meets with their advisor to plan a specific program to meet individual needs. This includes three main parts as outlined in the online Graduate Catalog under "Program of Study."
All students complete a final Action Research Project, based on a study of their own teaching. This Action Research Project is pressented at a seminar of faculty and fellow students.
How do I enroll for graduate level courses?
Elementary and Early Childhood graduate students may call the Curriculum and Instruction office at 618.650.3082. A Course Request Form (CRF) will be filled out by the student worker or secretary and given to the student's advisor for approval. The student will be asked for name, ID number, advisor's name, and a telephone number. Students should check COUGARNET to be sure that they have been enrolled in the course(s) requested. If a student is not active, has a health hold, or is waitlisted for a course, he/she is notified by the C&I office.
Can I take courses without being admitted into the Elementary Education Program?
