Overview:
The Master of Science in Education with a major in Curriculum & Instruction provides practicing teachers with the opportunity to develop deeper and broader understandings of the challenges of teaching and learning in today’s diverse schools. This program draws on the many areas of expertise of the C & I faculty and offers opportunities for learning that can help you grow in your ability to become a leader in your profession.

Program of Study:
Within this 36 credit program, you will work closely with a faculty mentor to develop a program of study that meets your personal and professional goals.
SOE Core: (9 hours) EPFR 501 Research Methods
EPFR 515 Advanced Educational Psychology
EPFR 520 or 521 Foundations of Education
CI Core: (9 hours)
CI 563 Curriculum Models
CI 510 Analysis of Instruction
CI 548 Evaluation of Classroom Instruction: Action Research
Area of Emphasis: (18 credits)
Courses selected with help of faculty mentor
CI 596 Field Studies (Action Research project) (6 hours)
An area of emphasis offers many possibilities for study such as:
- Particular subject area such as literacy, math, science or social studies
- Particular age groups such as early childhood, elementary, middle school, or high school
- Professional issues such as curriculum development, differentiated instruction, assessment of student learning, teacher inquiry, or teacher leadership.

Admission Requirements:
You must have: - A bachelor’s degree with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher (A=4.0) for the last 2 years of undergraduate work. Applicants with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.9 may be considered upon appeal.

Admission Procedure:
- Complete and submit the Graduate Admissions Application (classified) form, which can be obtained from the Student Service Center, or online at www.siue.edu/GRADUATE/application/index.html. Also, you will need to submit official transcripts of all college coursework to the Graduate School.
- Complete and submit the Curriculum & Instruction Application form, which can be obtained from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Founders Hall, room 1133, 618.650.3082, or online at http://www.siue.edu/education/ci/graduate/pdf/grad_ap.pdf.
- The completed Graduate Admissions Application, the Curriculum & Instruction Application, and transcripts are reviewed by C & I faculty for admission into a graduate program.
- Upon notification of acceptance, make an appointment to meet with your assigned faculty mentor to plan a program of study.
- As an unclassified student (prior to admission to a program), you may enroll in up to 12 hours of graduate credit as an unclassified graduate student. These credits may be transferred into a graduate program by completing a Graduate Student Request Form (LINK). Before taking unclassified credit hours you are strongly advised to consult with a C & I faculty mentor.
- SIUE allows six years from the date of the first course (transferred or SIUE) to complete your degree.
