About Dr. Denkyirah

Dr. Anthony M. Denkyirah is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the School of Education, Health, and Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Dr. Denkyirah obtained a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Special Education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in August, 2003, and joined the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders at SIUE in September of the same year. Dr. Denkyirah teaches foundation courses in special education, method courses for learners with significant disabilities, and transition planning for youths with special needs. Before settling in the USA in 1999, Dr. Denkyirah taught elementary, high school, and college-level courses in Ghana, West Africa, for 7 years, and has since pursued an interest in international education. 

Dr. Denkyirah has been an invited lead presenter at Special Education conferences in Africa, and presented papers at international conferences in Europe and USA. He collaborates with scholars from Nigeria, Ghana, and other Africa countries in conducting research, developing curricula for higher education, and training special education and rehabilitation professionals.  Dr. Denkyirah was the recipient of the Merit Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Special Education in Africa at the 2nd International Conference of the Global Education Network, held at the Institute of Social, Statistical and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana, Legon, in May 2013. Dr. Denkyirah spent the summer of 2015 at the University of Education Winneba, Ghana, as a Carnegie Scholar on the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program, where he trained community leaders and families of individuals with special needs, graduate students in Special Education and Community-based Rehabilitation Studies, university faculty, and other stakeholders to conduct single-systems research, develop transition plans, and evaluate program effectiveness.
