60’s

Joyce Williams ’61, ’65
was awarded the Community Service Award in the education category at the SIUE Kimmel Awards recognition program.  Block captain of the Fairlawn subdivision in East St. Louis, Williams has used her teaching and administrative skills to clean up and beautify her neighborhood.

Bill Nunes ’63, ’64, ’73 writes a book a year and has written thirteen times about various aspects of Illinois History.  His latest work, The Big Book of St. Louis Nostalgia, will be out in July of 2008.

Eugene Redmond ’64, ’65 was awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters from SIUE.  He became poet laureate of East St. Louis in l976 and won an American book award in 1991.

Leroy Fritz ’67 was recognized with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, among other honors, for his actions during World War II.  Fritz retired from the Alton School District in 1981 and just marked his 50th year in the piano-tuning business.

70’s

Robert Zerkle ’70 was honored recently by the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools for his efforts to reform school finances with Friends of NAFIS Award.  The award is given to a person who has provided long-term support or service in the field of education through impact aid.

Jeanne Brunworth ’71, ’85 was chosen as a finalist for the National Education Association Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence.

Karen Kelly ’72, ’77, ’83 was previously known as Karen Kelly Schutzenhofer. She has been a faculty member in the School of Nursing since 2002, returning to teaching after 14 years in administration and consulting.

Steve Bradley ’73, ’95 has recently retired from teaching and coaching wrestling after 33 seasons of guiding wrestlers at the Civic memorial.

David Timmermann ’73, ’86, ‘96 was appointed principal at St. Paul Catholic School in Highland.  Timmermann has 21 years of experience as principal and superintendent of Breese Grade Schools.

Larry Thompson ’74 recently received the YWCA “Men of Distinction” award for their outstanding personal achievement and contributions to the community.

Christal Allen ’75 holds a MEd in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Oklahoma and received her National Board certification in School Counseling in ’07.

Jane Hemann ’75, ’84 won the national Excellence in Teaching Agriculture Award for 2008.  Jane is a first-grade teacher at Mount Olive and developed a farm unit to help her students learn how agriculture is part of their everyday life.

Debra Dachsteiner ’76, ’97 is the 2007 Emerson Excellence in Teaching award recipient for the Triad School District.

John McDaniels ’77 recently received the YWCA “Men of Distinction” award for their outstanding personal achievement and contributions to the community.

80’s

Michael Waldo ’80, ’86 has been named the Large School Boys Basketball Coach of the Year from Edwardsville High School.

Karen Schillings ’81 recently received Homewood’s Hometown Hero Award during the WGN Radio Hometown Voices Tour.  She also recently wrote and received a grant from Homewood Foundation for Educational Excellence to start a monthly featured fruits and vegetables program at Willow School.

Nancy Spina ’85 has recently been appointed assistant superintendent at Woodland Elementary School.

Michael Slaughter ’87 won four gold and one silver medal last year in the Illinois Senior Olympics swimming competition.  Mike is working to qualify for nationals in 2009 and is the current principal of Marquette Catholic High School.

Lori Blade ’88, ’94 has been awarded the Large School Girls Basketball Coach of the Year from Edwardsville High School.

Martha Richey ’88 was appointed to serve as the first principal of Albert Cassens Elementary School.

90’s

Jon Wagner ’90, ’05 has been awarded the Wrestling Coach of the Year from Edwardsville High School.

Debra Kreutztrager ’92, ’98, was recently appointed the first female superintendent at Roxana School District.

Carol Poll-Pacatte ’92 was recently inducted into the Lewis and Clark Community College Athletic Hall of Fame.

Rhonda Kiger ’93 is currently a math teacher at Carrollton High School.  She will retire at the end of the 2008-2009 and is being honored for her 36 years of teaching chemistry, physics and math.

Terri Taake ’95 has accepted the position of head basketball coach at Jerseyville High School.

Alan Churchman ’96, ’00 has been appointed the position of Curriculum Director for Jersey Community School District Unit 100.

Barb Gillian ’96 has been assigned the new principal at Alton High School.

Heather Strebel ’97, ’00 was awarded the March “Heart of the School” Award, which is presented to employees, volunteers and parents of the Alton School District that go the “extra mile’ in providing services to students.

00’s

Mark Briggs ’00 was awarded the Small School Boys Basketball Coach of the Year from Roxana High School.

Christine Bahr ’01 has been appointed the new provost and dean at McKendree University.

Mark Beatty ’01, a teacher and coach in the Bethalto School District, recently won the Excellence in Teaching Award for Madison County.

Dan Underwood ’02 has been promoted to varsity head coach of girl’s basketball at Mascoutah High School.  He currently teaches grade school physical education in Mascoutah.

Ryan Ketchum ’04 has been promoted to Assistant Principal at Woodland Elementary.

Daniel Lytle ’04 has recently received his juris doctorate from SLU and joined Hepler, Broom, MacDonald, Hebrank True & Noce LLC.

Michael Brey ’06 has been promoted to Assistant Principal at Alton High School.

Keith McGlasson ’06 has been appointed the head coach of the Carlyle High Indians varsity football team.
