Overview
The Special Education program offers a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) approved preparation program at the undergraduate level for the Illinois Learning-Behavior Specialist I certification. The program provides coursework and practicum experiences which focus on mild, moderate, and severe disabilities at all levels through adulthood. The Special Education program, in conjunction with the Early Childhood program in Curriculum and Instruction, also provides courses required for Early Childhood Special Education approval.
Program of Study
The Special Education undergraduate program is designed as a “cohort” model. In this model candidates take a set of special education classes together in a “block like” design. Candidates accepted into a cohort will take ten pre-set course hours in semester one; eleven pre-set course hours in semester two; fifteen pre-set course hours in semester three; and fifteen pre-set course hours in semester four (student teaching). Candidates also complete fifteen hours of “flex” classes taken during semester one and two. The Special Education program is two years in length, with the last semester being an all day/every day commitment.
The Special Education program has a competitive and limited enrollment policy. Because the number of qualified applicants may exceed program resources, meeting or surpassing the minimum eligibility criteria will not guarantee admission to the program.
