Secondary Education Advisement

Bachelors Degree Program

Overview

Secondary Education is a sequence of professional courses leading to a teaching certificate for secondary schools. In the first two years, students complete a program of general education in Skills, Fine Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, and Mathematics. During this time, students also enroll in Curriculum and Instruction 200, Introduction to Education. During the third and fourth years, students ordinarily work in the major teaching field and in professional education. Students must complete the mandatory 100+ pre-clinical hours prior to student teaching.

Secondary education is not considered a major at SIUE.  You must contact an advisor in one of the areas of certification SIUE offers (see major grid below) even if you have a degree in that area.

Advising:

Students already holding a bachelor’s degree may work on a master’s degree while obtaining certification.  Students must receive certification before obtaining their master’s degree.  Students in this situation may also want to consider the MAT program.

The advisors in OCECA (Office of Clinical Experiences, Certification, and Advisement) monitor admission into teacher education and will place you in the appropriate professional education classes.

Secondary Education Program Guide

Admission to Teacher Education:

Prior to admittance to the Teacher Education Program and prior to being registered for any professional education classes, students must complete the following requirements:

a. Pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test through the Illinois State Board of Education (ICTS).  Registration and study booklets are available online at www.icts.nesinc.comThis test is critical and must be taken immediately before students can take any School of Education coursework above CI 200..

b. Pass CI 200 (Intro to Education) with a “C” or better.  This course is a prerequisite for the remainder of the professional education courses.  Students will begin to accrue the 100 clock hours required for certification by the state of Illinois during this course.  An equivalent of CI 200 may be transferred from other institutions.

c. Obtain a GPA from SIUE of 2.5 or higher along with a combined GPA of 2.5 from all other institutions.

Professional Education coursework:

Usually students will be placed in professional education courses during their final year at the university.  The courses will include EPFR 315, EPFR 320, SPE 400, CI 315a, CI 440, CI 315b, and CI 352.  Because space available is limited, only OCECA advisors will register students for these classes (contingent upon their admission to the Teacher Education Program).  Graduate students must register for the graduate equivalents of these courses through Curriculum and Instruction.

EPFR 315, EPFR 320, SPE 400, and CI 440 may be taken any time after the student has been admitted into the Teacher Education Program. Students must receive a “C” or better in all of these professional education courses.

Required Illinois State Tests:

The student must take the ICTS Content-area Test in his/her major prior to student teaching.  Information on the tests may be found at www.icts.nesinc.com.

Students are also required to take the APT (Aptitude in Professional Teaching) test prior to certification.  All K-12 students should take the Special K-12 APT test.  All other students should take the 6-12 APT test.  Students may register and obtain study guides online at www.icts.nesinc.com.

Endorsements:

Although secondary certification will appear as grades 6-12 on your certificate, the state requires two courses for middle school endorsements (grades 6-8).  Those classes are EPFR 415 and CI 407.

Please consult with an OCECA advisor for information on endorsements (additional teaching fields) and any scholarship information available for secondary students.  The Secondary Endorsement Worksheet and Middle School Worksheet may be useful in considering additional endorsements
