Overview
The Early Childhood Education program at SIUE is offered as a Partnership program. Students acquire experience with children on regular basis working with the range of ages that encompass early childhood education; infant-toddler, prekindergarten, and kindergarten-primary. Students relate their ongoing work with young children in the schools with classes they take on campus. Students gradually gain the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to demonstrate competence with the Standards in Early Childhood Education, which is the basis for the early childhood teacher preparation program.

In the first two years, students complete their general education requirements. The last two years consist of professional education courses in which students accumulate the required 100 hours of clinical experiences before student teaching.

Before a student is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education Program, they must pass a Basic Skills Test in addition to meeting the admission requirements.

The current routes to initial certification in Early Childhood at SIUE are:

1. Early Childhood Partnership Program - The two year Partnership Program is extremely competitive, has limited enrollment and requires faculty approval.  In any semester, there may be more applicants than openings.  For admission requirements please read carefully the appropriate Partnership Program information sheet and the Admission Policy

2. EChOS (non traditional program)
Students working in an early childhood setting may be able to complete some or all of their student teaching in their current place of employment while being paid. This program is offered two classes per semester, all evening and requires eight semesters of classes plus student teaching. Each semester will require 25-30 hours of field experience arranged around your work schedule, while some field hours may be completed within your own classroom. There will be a two week intensive in an elementary classroom. You must pass the Illinois Basic Skills Test before beginning the program
