Lesson Plan description and Rationale

Students will analyze alternate sources of light that were used before the invention of the light bulb.  They will compare the light bulbs in the video to the light bulbs of today.  A final analysis between the alternate sources of light and the light bulb will be conducted.

State Standards

State Goal 1: Read with understanding and fluency.

1C – Comprehend a broad range of reading materials.

Methods

1.    Students will view photographs of candles and lanterns being used.  A discussion will be led about how these were used as the sources of light for homes and businesses.

2.    Students will discuss and analyze the effectiveness of these items as light sources while viewing the photographs.  They will create a Venn diagram comparing/contrasting these alternate light sources to the use of light bulbs.

3.    Students will view the video, “A Day With Edison”.

4.    Students will compare the light bulbs in the video to the light bulbs of today.

5.    Students will create two drawings using the Before & After worksheet. Lesson 2 Worksheet  One drawing will depict what life was like before the use of the light bulb and the other will show how life was different after the invention of the light bulb.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on their participation in the creation of the Venn diagram and also on their drawings of life before and after the invention of light bulb.
