Lesson Plan Description and Rationale

 

The students will be learning about the history of immigration.  During this time they will be exploring the hardships immigrants encountered when entering the United States.  This lesson is designed to be implanted at the end of the unit.  It is important students understand the diversity surrounding them.

 

State Standards (Illinois)

 

·        16. A.1a Explain the difference between past, present and future time; place themselves in time.

·        16. A.1b Ask historical questions and seek out answers from historical sources (e.g., myths, biographies, stories, old photographs, artwork, other visual or electronic sources)

·        3.B.1a Use prewriting strategies to generate ad organize ideas

·        3.C.1b Write for a variety of purposes including description, information, explanation, persuasion and narration

 

Objectives

 

1.     Student will gain knowledge of hardships immigrants had encountered.

2.     Student will gain an appreciation for immigrants wanting a better life.

3.     Students will be able to identify with the person they choose and creatively write about their life as an immigrant.

Methods

 

Day # 1 Lesson

1.     Teacher will review what they have covered in this lesson study.

2.     Teacher will read one of the following books:                                                                        

    3. The students will be given writing rubric for better understanding of the expectations.

Day #2 Lesson

1.     Teacher will place pictures on PowerPoint and give handouts.  The students will choose one Immigrant they want to portray.

2.     Students will be given a writing web to help organize ideas.

3.     Students will work independently.

Day #3 Lesson

1.     Teacher will pick student’s writings that followed rubric provided.

2.     Teacher will make overheads of students work.

3.     The teacher will have class discussion.
