Lesson plan description and rationale:

This lesson will help bring the realities of war to the students.  They will have a better understanding of the death, destruction, causalities, and will hopefully be more sensitive to our veterans.

State Standards:

16.A.2c Ask questions and seek answers by collecting and analyzing data from historic documents, images and other literary and non-literary sources.

Objectives:

After reading our social studies lesson on World War II, the students will be placed in small groups. Half of the class will report on the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the other half will report on the battles in Italy.  They will become reporters from the time of World War II describing who, what, where, when, and why these locations need to be covered to understand the war.

Methods:

1.      As a class, we will read our chapter on World War II in our social studies book.  To extend from the book, the class will be placed in small groups consisting of 4 students.  I will divide these groups in either reporting on Pearl Harbor or the battles in Italy.

2.      The students will use pictures (all pictures used in newsletter will come from an American Memory website listed from the resource page) and stories from the websites to create a first hand account of the events and place them in a newsletter in Publisher.  They will answer the 5 W’s (who, what, when, where, and why) of their topic.

3.      The students will use the information from their newsletter to give an oral presentation to the class.

Evaluation:

The students will be graded on the content within their newsletter and their oral presentation to the class.
