Lesson Plan Description and Rationale:

Our second and third graders study the celebration of America and the importance of our national government. The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the students to the home of our President which rests in our nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C. Appreciating the impact that the White House plays on our governmental systems and understanding the activities that take place in this famous building are goals of this lesson.

 

State Standards:

State Goal 14: Understand political systems, with an emphasis on the United States.

Standard 14B: Understand the structures and functions of the political systems of Illinois, the United States, and other nations.

Objectives:

1.    Students will learn about the importance of the White House through pictures from American Memory.

2.    Students will explore the White House and important rooms within through books in the classroom, as well as a PowerPoint of primary sources.

3.    Students will take an online tour of the White House and take notes of interesting facts found.

4.    Students will select 3 rooms within the White House and design a tour brochure including interesting facts that they have found in books, the internet, etc. The brochure will also include interesting facts on the White House in general as well as 1 page of “other interesting facts”.

Methods:

1.    Students will complete an “anticipation guide” of true/false questions based on the book Symbols of Freedom: The White House by Tristan Boyer Binns.

2.    Teacher will read the book Symbols of Freedom: The White House by Tristan Boyer Binns.

3.    After listening to the story, the students will complete their “anticipation guide”.

4.    "A Trip Through The White House" PowerPoint presentation will be shown to the students and predictions will be made of what the use of these rooms might be.

5.    Students will select 3 rooms that they would like to research.

6.    Students will then take an online tour of the White House on the website http://www.whitehouse.gov. They will work in pairs to take notes on information obtained about each room that they have chosen, as well as interesting facts about the White House in general.

7.    Students will explore various books about the White House, including Math CrossSections: The White House by: Susan Ohanian and Capital! Washington, D.C. from A to Z by: Laura Krauss Melmed and FraneLessac during silent reading time, continuing to take notes on the rooms they have selected as well as other interesting facts they have found.

8.    Students will use their notes to complete their tour brochure which has been created by the teacher using PrintShop.

9.    Students will share their brochures with their classmates through a presentation.

10. Students will complete a quiz on the important aspects of the White House (downloaded from http://www.enchantedlearning.com).
