ANNUAL HONORS DAY

Honors Day Awards are given to students based on the sponsor's criteria on the individual awards.  Disability Support Services is proud to recognize the recipients of the following awards.

The Paul J. Campisi Award is awarded for academic excellence.   The award was established in honor of Paul J. Campisi, who was a professor of Sociology at SIUE.  He died in 1995 and it was the wish of the family that this award be established to recognize two outstanding senior students with a disability.    James K. Goltz, who is an English major, and Patricia Trautmann, who is undeclared and considers herself a pre-pharmacy student, are the award recipients for the 2008 Paul J. Campisi Award.

The Ruby Bratten Lions Club Award, which is based on academic excellence, will also be presented at that time.  The Edwardsville Lions Club, in honor of Ruby Bratten, sponsors this award.  This award is given to recognize students with a disability who are seniors at SIUE.    The award recipients for 2008 are Matthew Brigman, Charles T. Montgomery and Eric J. Wesselmann.   Matt is a Speech Language & Pathology major, Charles is a Computer Science major and Eric is majoring in Geography.

One of the awards being presented is that of the Noble R. Thompson III Student Disabilities Award.    Nobel R. Thompson III was a professor in the Geography Department at SIUE for many years and died in 2001.  During his tenure at the university, Noble was an advocate for students with disabilities, particularly students with visual impairments.  The student who receives this award must be visually impaired and have the highest grade point average of the students with a visual impairment.  Joshua Wade, an SIUE Computer Science major, is the 2008 recipient of the Noble R. Thompson III Award.

The John B. Eiserle Memorial Award Fund was established in 2005 to commemorate John Eiserle's life and dedication to education.  The recipient must be a currently enrolled SIUE student who uses a wheelchair and maintains a "B" average.   The recipient of the John B. Eiserle Memorial Award Fund for 2008 is Joseph F. Avellone who is majoring in Political Science.

The names of all award recipients will be added to the plaques of honor which are in the Disability Support Services Office.  Congratulations to all of our deserving award recipients.
