Dental education is among the most costly professional training programs and often incurs the highest per student educational costs on campus. While these costs continue to grow, federal and state support for dental education has declined dramatically in recent years.
In turn, the cost of tuition has increased. Tuition for our entering class is over $27,000 annually. Debt for dental students has continued to accelerate at a significantly faster rate than the real net income of practicing dentists.
Dental education is becoming unaffordable at a time when more dentists are needed to serve the population. Tuition costs and post-graduate debt may discourage talented students from pursuing dental careers.
By establishing a substantial School of Dental Medicine Student Scholarship Endowment, the School could guarantee deserving dental students four years of scholarship support as long as they maintain good academic standing. The School seeks to offer a combination of need-based and merit-based scholarships to provide the best opportunity for dental students to reach their full potential.

Announcing the 2012-2013 Dr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Sim Scholarship Recipients
At present, the Dr. and Mrs. Joseph M. Sim Scholarship is the most significant student scholarship funded through the School of Dental Medicine Student Scholarship Fund. We are pleased to announce the 2012-2013 Dr. & Mrs. Joseph M. Sim Scholarship recipients: Ms. Kristen Beversdorf, Ms. Britly Barton and Ms. Ana North.
Dr. Joseph Sim, a well-regarded Emeritus faculty member at the SIU School of Dental Medicine, had established a tradition of awarding this annual scholarship before he passed away in December, 2002. Mrs. Pat Sim has generously continued this tradition every year since that time.
The Dr. & Mrs. Joseph M. Sim Scholarship recognizes high academic achievement among dental students at the SIU School of Dental Medicine. Congratulations to Kristen, Britley and Ana!
We encourage all alumni, faculty and friends of the SIU School of Dental Medicine to think about the gift of a scholarship for one or more of our students. Giving to the School of Dental Medicine Student Scholarship Fund provides perhaps the truest opportunity to directly impact the lives of our dental students.
You may also wish to consider a gift to create a more personal scholarship endowment, establishing a named scholarship to be awarded annually in perpetuity in your name or the name of a cherished loved one or friend. This option is a wonderful way to leave a lasting legacy at the SIU School of Dental Medicine.
We are grateful for any gift you offer to the School of Dental Medicine Student Scholarship Fund. Certainly our students will appreciate your kindness also.
