Escape from Edwardsville is an incentive program with the aim of providing a long term adherence to exercise. This program starts in the Spring 2008 semester and has no end date. You will decide which mode of exercise you will use to make your escape. You may choose to run and/or walk, swim, bike, or elliptical. The distance you are shooting for will be determined by the mode you choose. What you will do is log the mileage of each workout and add them up until you reach your mileage goal. We will place a binder for all to log in the weight room and in the pool for the swimmers. Once you reach your goal you will receive a t-shirt displaying your accomplishment. Sign up in the wellness center or email Kyle Wood at kywood@siue.edu. The mileages are listed below.
Run/Walk to Kansas City -260 miles
Swim the Mississippi River to Quincy, IL -150 miles
Bike to Denver -863 miles
Cross-Country Ski (elliptical) to Nashville 309 milesFAQ’s
Q: Do I have to complete all of these miles at once?
A: No, this is a progressive program where all of the miles you do daily add up to complete the total mileage. This can be done over any length of time.Q: Do I have to finish by the end of spring semester?
A: No, this is an ongoing event with a more long term goal to help make fitness a long-term habit instead of a quick fix.Q: Who is this open to?
A: This is open to all students and SFC membersQ: Can I do my miles outdoors?
A: Yes, as long as you are a student or SFC member.Q: If I choose one mode of exercise can I use a different mode’s miles and add them to mine? i.e. If I choose to run/walk can I use miles I bike and add them on?
A: No, while we encourage mixing up your routine and doing different exercises these modes are different and biking a mile is not the same as running a mile. However if you choose to run or walk, you can run, walk, or do both as these activities are similar.Q: Do the cross trainers count as ellipticals?
A: Yes, these are very closely related and miles accumulated on both machines can count towards the elliptical goal.

Sole Provider
Wondering what in the world you are going to do with all those running shoes in your closet that you’re never going to wear again, but don’t want to throw them away? Why not donate them! Bring in your old shoes that are still in decent condition (please wash first!) and place them in the bin located in the Student Fitness Center lobby. All shoes will be given to the Glen-Ed Food Pantry to help out local individuals that may be struggling and need that extra help.
