C-Rec Rumble!

Rumble News

In month 3 of the year long CREC Rumble, we saw that one set of events can change the landscape of the leader board.  Monster Ball was a HUGE (literally) success, but it was not without its share of dangers and problems.  A few of the captains took some nasty falls, and there were issues with proper inflation, but when all was said and done just about everyone had a great time playing a game that was, for lack of a better term, “larger than life”.  Pictionary also went well, and we saw a tie between two teams for first place after the judges decided that the outcome was too close to determine a true winner.

Although it looks as though the Lackadaisically Lazy Legless Little Ladies with Lisps are going to run away with the competition this year from this point, the other 3 remaining teams are separated from each other by only 6 points each after this month’s events.  If we continue to see the competitive fight amongst the 3 underdog teams, it is not inconceivable that someone can make a run at the reigning leaders in the long run.  Hopefully they don’t get too comfortable, because as the old saying goes, “we have many miles to go before we sleep.”  After all, we’re not even halfway through the year, and no one is looking to throw in the towel just yet!

November also saw the emergence of an additional captain for the Nation of Domination.  Corey Newgent, who served as an intern in the summer and now is running things from our rec programming side of things, was introduced to his team during the event.  We also saw the loss of former captain Lonnie Thurston for the Urban Commandos, who are still holding onto second place in the rankings.  What implications will this shakeup in leadership have for our teams over the course of the next few months?  Check back regularly to find out!

A Lackadaisically Lazy Legless Little Lady with a Lisp – 17pts

These “little ladies” are showing absolutely no signs of slowing down over the course of this competition.  They consistently have the highest attendance among teammates, and they are yet to finish outside of the top 2 in any event.  After winning the Monster Ball tournament and finishing in a controversial tie with the Suburban Commandos during Pictionary, the not so lackadaisical, speech impeded ladies tightened their grip on first place.  Don’t let their strange, alliterated name fool you: the L5’s are playing for keeps.

Urban Commandos – 6pts

The Rumble’s 2nd place team showed its first signs of struggle this month, finishing 3rd and 4th in the Monster Ball and Pictionary, respectively.  However, it was their performance in Monster Ball that was probably the most impressive showing among any team.  With only 5 participants in attendance, they demonstrated that you don’t need huge numbers in order to succeed.  They lost to the L5’s in their first game by a margin of 2 points, and they went on to beat the Suburban Commandos to hang onto 3rd place in the second round.  A large contributor to their successful outcome was team member Justin Metz’s ability to adapt to the dynamics of monster ball, who made the games extremely memorable to watch.  Although they placed fourth during Pictionary due to what they felt was a clear miscommunication, they still are in second place overall and can easily shake off this month’s perceived struggles by continuing to show the intense competitive spirit that they’ve been showing all semester.

The Suburban Commandos – 10pts

Could the Suburban Commandos be a legitimate contender this year?  After some early struggles in the September and October events, they’ve showed some promise by having 2 first place finishes in Spirit Week and in their controversial tie in Pictionary with the L5’s.  Although they placed last in Monster Ball, they have been gaining steady ground on the competition and are now only 6 points out from the 2nd place Urban Commandos.  However, they also need to look out behind them because the Nation of Domination looks hungry to gain some ground, and they, too, are only 6 points separated from the Suburban Commandos.

The Nation of Domination – 10pts

The NOD showed improved numbers during this month’s event and managed to grab a close 2nd place finish in the dangerous game of Monster Ball.  They let everyone know that despite their current place in the standings, they know that they are still contenders and this may mark the beginning of a comeback that the other teams need to be wary of.  With a name like the Nation of Domination, it hardly seems impossible that they can march through the rest of the year and begin a show of true dominance over their competitors.  This team is hungry, and the other teams will definitely need to keep their eye on them because with 5 months of events left to go, anything is possible.

The C-Rec Rumble is a series of competitive events designed to engage the entire student staff in SIUE’s Campus Recreation department.  All of our student employees have been assigned to one of four teams all being led by a combination of Graduate Assistants and Student Supervisors.  The purpose of the C-Rec Rumble is not only to provide a set of fun activities for our student staff, but it also serves as a way to promote bonding amongst the entire staff as a whole.  This is the one type of event where employees from all of the different departments (Front Desk, Equipment Issue, Weight Room, Aerobics, Personal Trainers, Lifeguards, Rock Wall, Marketing, Tech. Support, Intramurals, Student Supervisors, and Graduate Assistants) can get a chance to know each other and get involved with each other in order to foster a team atmosphere.

Points are awarded to all of these teams based on where they place during each competitive event.  There are about 2-3 competitive events per month and the types of events range from sports to knowledge based games to other types of large-scale participatory events.  Point values for each event are assigned as follows:

  • 1st place – 8 points
  • 2nd place – 6 points
  • 3rd place – 4 points
  • 4th place – 2 points

In addition, the team with the most participants at the event will receive an additional point for each date that we have events taking place.

At the end of the academic year, the team with the most overall points will receive a reward that is as-yet unnamed.  However, in the grand scheme of things we are all winners for being able to get to know each other better and to foster a friendly environment for all of our employees to share in.
