Schedule of Work Hours

The supervisor will arrange working hours. Students should give a copy of their class schedule to their supervisor as soon after they register as possible for use in scheduling hours.

Hours, Duration of Jobs, and Break Weeks

  • Students work and average 10 - 20 hours per week. This is a temporary student work position. The position is subject to renewal at the beginning of each semester.
  • The Student Fitness Center is open on some designated official university holidays. Students are expected to work during holidays and break weeks.
  • In case of inclement weather when classes are cancelled, you are expected to report to work.
  • Students may not work more than 20 hours per week. If you work at more than one location on campus, the total hours cannot exceed 20 hours.

Technical Support

Job Description: Provides support to staff with technical issues including printers, programs, and setting up projectors. Also, responsibilities include making sure the Campus Recreation website is updated and looking its best.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all information on the website (http://www.siue.edu/crec) is presented in a neat and orderly manner
  • Update current website information as soon as possible
  • Create programs, classes, products, and prices using Department management software
  • Install the latest software updates from Microsoft and Department management software when they become available
  • Connect local and networked printers to computers

Reception Desk Attendant

Job Description: Provide customer service to patrons purchasing memberships, trips, and other services provided by Campus Recreation.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist with membership sales
  • Register members for various programs
  • Perform cash and credit card transactions
  • Answer facility and program related questions
  • Perform general office duties
  • Provide members with information on Campus Recreation programs
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned
  • Work a minimum of 3 hours per semester at special events (i.e., commencement, late nighters, March Down, Valentine's Fitness Da, etc.)

Equipment Issue Attendant

Job Description: Support the needs of our patrons with pro-shop sales, no cost or low fee sports equipment rentals, court reservation, locker rental and other support services.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Welcome, greet and provide assistance to facility users.
  • Issue sports equipment to students and patrons with valid ID.
  • Set-up courts for sports activities (i.e., volleyball, badminton, etc.).
  • Take reservation for court space in VC and SFC courts.
  • Reserve locker for daily use and yearly rental.
  • Laundry service for departmental use.
  • Inform facility users of various Campus Recreation sponsored programs.
  • Enforce all facility and program policies and procedures.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Indoor/Outdoor Pool Lifeguard

Job Description: Monitor and supervise the pool facilities, enforcing policies and procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and enforce pool rules and policies.
  • Keep facility clean and organized.
  • Know facility's emergency action plan, and how to engage it.
  • Perform life saving duties when needed.
  • Answer patrons questions and follow up on requests.
  • Assist with the opening and closing the facility as needed.
  • Attend all scheduled meetings and in-services.
  • Maintain a good level of physical fitness.
  • Work with swim lessons and private parties.

Knowledge / Skills Required for the Job:

Group Fitness Instructor

Job Description: Teach group exercise classes to the University community.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead structured exercise classes (i.e. kickboxing, step, hi/lo, funk, yoga, pilates, muscle conditioning, water aerobics, etc.)
  • Assist with the maintenance of exercise equipment (i.e. body bars, stability balls, rubber tubing, hand weights, etc.

Climbing Gym Supervisor

Job Description: Supervise the Climbing Gym located in the Vadalabene Center.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Teach Primary Safety / Orientation classes.
  • Belay users.
  • Assist individuals with climbing equipment.
  • Assist with hosting group climbing events.
  • Offer users advice on how to improve their climbing skills and techniques.
  • Maintain climbing equipment and wall.

Intramural Sports Supervisor

Job Description: The purpose of the supervisor position is to supervise intramural team sports including flag football, volleyball, indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, basketball, softball, and other activities. Supervisors are also responsible for overseeing and managing a safe and pleasant atmosphere for intramural participants and for assisting the professional staff when needed. Attendance at mandatory supervisors, officials, and captains meetings is also required. Work under the supervision of the Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports along with the Assistant Director of Recreation Programs. Student supervising is a semester employment opportunity.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provide pre-game assistance for the set-up of intramural sports
    • Arrive early and set up the facility for the intramural activity
    • Pick up daily game sheets and keys for the day's/night's activities
    • Bring first aid kit and walkie talkie to event.
    • Check out equipment to participants
    • Assist in setting up equipment for the day's/night's activities
    • Assist in examining facility for safety hazards
    • Assist in signing in intramural teams and in verifying their eligibility
    • Ensuring that participants sign liability waivers
    • Assign the intramural officials to their partners and field/court assignments
    • Act as a resource and service person for participants
    • Complete the required forms
    • Confirm status of the event should event cause a cancellation
  2. Provide quality supervision during contests
    • View the intramural contest and attempt to anticipate problems
    • Oversee the intramural contest and ensure participation takes place in a safe manner, Never leave any intramural event unsupervised
    • Provide training and support to the intramural officials staff
    • Diffuse any potential problems involving spectators, coaches, or players
    • Fill out any forms that are required during the day's/night's events
    • Aid participants with injuries by providing First Aid and CPR, and report all injuries or problems to the Intramural G.A.
    • Dissipates Disagreements

Student Supervisor

Job Description: The job of Student Facility Supervisor is to manage, oversee, and monitor all areas of the Student Fitness Center and Campus Recreation operation. Oversee safety, customer service and procedure adherence for all programs in facility while providing guidance, leadership and evaluation feedback for 150 student staff in indoor/outdoor aquatics, fitness, member services, equipment issue, intramurals, climbing, technical, marketing and custodial areas including opening/closing responsibilities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a leader and ambassador of SIUE Campus Recreation
  • Display and maintain a positive approach in your interactions, duties and management of others.
  • Lead guest liaison for any rentals or reservations that may be scheduled in Campus Recreation facility areas. Complete or delegate assignments for these groups as needed.
  • Monitor/verify financial transactions/reports for each student shift in each financial position
  • Initiate communication and interact with other agencies as needed, such as SIUE Police, tradesmen, engineers or any other department.
  • Provide immediate or timely feedback for maintenance concerns as appropriate
  • The ability to work and fill in when shifts need coverage
  • The ability to work well within and bring resolution to stressful situations as they arise
  • Supervise opening/closing of the SFC and/or other facility areas as needed
  • Supervise safe and appropriate equipment set-ups
  • Perform building safety and liability checks to include maintenance, medical and other concerns

Intramural Sports Official

Job Description: Officiate Intramural Team Sports including Flag Football, Basketball, Softball, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, and other Seasonal Team Sports. Work under the supervision of the Student Supervisor of Intramural Sports along with Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports. Attendance is required for the mandatory training and evaluation sessions. Students sports officiating is a seasonal employment opportunity with scheduling based on weekly performance evaluations.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Provide Pre-game assistance
    • Assist in setting up equipment for the evening and/or weekend activities
    • Sign-in and collect student ID's of Intramural Teams.
    • Assist in examining facility for safety hazards.
  2. Provide quality officiating during contests
    • View and follow the Intramural Sports contest and enforce the rules judiciously as possible.
    • Oversee the Intramural Sports contest and ensure participation take place in a safe manner.
  3. Assist in post game duties
    • Assist in completing any forms that are in need of completing.
    • Assist in closing down the activity are and collecting equipment at the conclusion of the beginning and/or weekend activities.
    • Assist in securing facility at the conclusion of the Intramural activity.

Knowledge / Skills Required for the Job:

  • Full-time students in good standing are eligible for employment.
  • Participation and Sports Officiating experience is preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of the SIUE Intramurals Sports Handbook.
  • A thorough knowledge of the Sports being officiated.
  • Physical ability to keep up with the sports being officiated.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
