The Recreation Coordinator (Fitness) functions as the Campus Recreation team leader for Fitness. This position will direct the members of their specific support team which includes three Graduate Assistants, a Secretary, numerous student staff and occasional student interns. The Coordinator is responsible for the management, planning, budgeting and supervision of all informal and instructional fitness programs provided by Campus Recreation for the students, faculty and staff of the University. The position requires a comprehensive knowledge of the physiological and psychological principles of physical activity and healthy lifestyles and skills in public relations, organizational management, leadership and evaluation. The Fitness Program is a critical subdivision of the total Campus Recreation department and as such, the Recreation Coordinator (Fitness) will be expected to maintain quality instructional and activity programs in strength training, cardiovascular training, group fitness, and personal training. Responsibilities also include the promotion and marketing of fitness/wellness programs and services. The Coordinator will also assist in directing, and maintaining informal facility use operations related to the fitness facilities and work cooperatively with all programs offered by Campus Recreation. The Coordinator oversees the Risk Management protocol for all fitness activities. The responsibilities of the position require direct contact with other academic and service units of the University.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP:
The Recreation Coordinator (Fitness) reports to the Assistant Director (Facilities and Informal Rec) of Campus Recreation, who reports to the Director, who in turn, reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The Coordinator supervises the work of one Secretary, three Graduate Assistants, a staff of 40-50 student employees and 5-10 adjunct civil service staff. Additional collaboration is available from within the Campus Recreation Department which has its own marketing, facilities, custodial and other personnel and resource groups that overlap with this position directly.
ACCOUNTABILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The Coordinator is responsible for providing guidance, and mentoring to student employees in the fitness program. The Coordinator guides the programs and services supervised in a manner that meets departmental, as well as, patron needs. Decisions made by the Coordinator can have an impact on programs hosted on a campus-wide basis. In general, programs and services supervised by the Coordinator can have impact on students, employees, alumni and their families. The Coordinator, under limited guidance from the Assistant Director, is expected to exercise independent judgment in order to correct immediate problems and maintain safety. Plans and decisions of the Coordinator, can be incorporated into the long-term planning process of the entire department. The Coordinator is expected to follow general budget guidelines established by the Director but is able to make decisions regarding equipment and commodity replacement needs in excess of $100,000/year. The Coordinator is responsible for a fitness equipment inventory in excess of $500,000.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
The position functions under limited supervision, requiring a knowledge of department policies and procedures. The position requires knowledge of marketing practices and techniques as they relate to providing leisure services to the University community. The Recreation Coordinator (Fitness) must have expertise in program planning, fitness equipment selection and maintenance, student training and development. Knowledge of exercise science and the skills necessary to operate a safe and rewarding program is essential. The Coordinator must be able to work effectively with all constituencies. A full understanding of the Student Affairs philosophy is essential. The person must understand budget planning, and service delivery systems. The Coordinator must possess strong oral and written communication skills, and management/supervisory skills. A Master's Degree in Exercise Science, Recreation, Sports Management, Physical Education, or closely related field is preferred. Group Fitness Instructor certification by ACE, AFAA or other nationally recognized organization. Certification by the ACSM as a Health/Fitness Specialist is preferred. One year of experience managing fitness and group exercise programs is also preferred.
Assignments and actions come from departmental policies and procedures, as well as past practices. Independent judgment is required to interpret and apply policies and practices. The Coordinator is responsible for developing and revising policies and practices to reflect current conditions. The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring all work, travel and program practices conform with established and accepted safety standards. On occasion, specific assignments are given by the Assistant Director. These assignments may be verbal or written. The Coordinator is responsible for investigating new trends and guiding the direction of the program to meet patron needs.
The position requires the Coordinator to be able to utilize a number of computer-based programs (CSI, EMS, Microfit) in the delivery of service programs. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. is beneficial. Ability to operate University transport vehicles. Knowledgeable in computer usage and Microsoft software programs. Ability to assist in other aspects of the total Campus Recreation program.

Group Fitness Instructor
Lead effective group exercise according to safety standards set forth by ACE, ACSM, and AFAA. Instructors are responsible for teaching participants in their area of specialization, utilizing proper technique and safety measures. Instructors must enforce the policies and procedures of the Student Fitness Center, clean and store fitness equipment, submit participant information, and report, respond to, and record injuries. Experience preferred. Instructors must maintain current Aerobics and CPR/AED certifications.
