Registration for each class is due 48 hours in advance. Please register at the SFC Front Desk.
The Primary Safety / Orientation course is designed for beginning climbers and/or those with very little or no experience. This two-hour class teaches beginning climbers how to top rope, the basic form of roped climbing. Participants will learn safety procedures, equipment usage, knot tying, proper belay technique, bouldering skills, and climbing gym policies and procedures. The class begins with a short lecture followed by direct instruction on the wall. Completion of the class provides participants with their Primary Card, and allows them to use the climbing gym during open climb hours. The Primary Card is good for one year. To re-certify each year, climbers need only to demonstrate their skills through the Quick Check program and pay a renewal fee. Participants must be 14 years of age or older to participate in this course.
Note: Climbers who obtain their Primary Card, but do not climb for a period of 6 months after earning their Primary Card, must retake the Primary Safety / Orientation course or go through the Quick Check program before being able to climb.
Quick Check Program
The Quick Check program is designed for those individuals who already have climbing and belaying experience. Successful completion of this course provides an individual with their Primary Card and allows him/her to use the SIUE Rock Climbing Gym during open climb hours. The Primary Card is good for one year. Those who chose the Quick Check option must show 100% proficiency in the following areas: pre-climb set up, knot tying, belaying, spotting, and proper climbing/belay commands. Anyone who shows less than 100% proficiency in any of these areas will be required to attend the Primary Safety / Orientation course before being allowed to use the SIUE Rock Climbing Gym.
The Quick Check program is available during Climbing Gym open hours only. Individuals interested in the Quick Check program must pay the appropriate fee at the SFC front desk and present their receipt to the Climbing Gym Supervisor before being able to participate in this program.
Participants must be 14 years of age or older to participate in this course.
