Clinical Training Opportunities at Counseling Services
The practicum program provides supervised training and experience in the direct practice of counseling. Practicum students counsel clients who present with a variety of issues such as adjustment disorders, affective disorders, relationship problems, substance abuse issues, and/or developmental problems. Practicum students should expect that the bulk of their experience will be in individual therapy. As available, practicum students will also have the opportunity to participate in outreach, group therapy, consultation, assessment, and cultural diversity training.
Program Description
During the summer, practicum counselors participate in an extensive orientation. The orientation provides an overview of the agency’s policies and procedures, and a review of ethical / legal issues and responsibilities. Each week practicum counselors receive at least one hour of individual supervision, two hours of case consultation, and two optional hours for general staff meeting. Practicum counselors are matched with senior staff members, who supervise their work throughout the placement. Audio and/or video recording of all client sessions is required. Review of the tapes is an important component of supervision.
Terms of Placement
To allow for continuity of treatment for clients, the practicum involves a 9 to 12 month commitment beginning in August. The SIUE Counseling Services Practicum Program requires approximately 12 to 20 hours per week depending on academic program requirements. The practicum experience does not offer a stipend.
