Clinical Training Opportunities at Counseling Services
The practicum program provides supervised training and experience in the direct practice of counseling. Practicum students counsel clients who present with a variety of issues such as adjustment disorders, affective disorders, relationship problems, substance abuse issues, and/or developmental problems. Practicum students should expect that the bulk of their experience will be in individual therapy and group therapy. Referral and case management opportunities are also available. As available, practicum students will also have the opportunity to participate in outreach, consultation, assessment, and cultural diversity training.
Practicum counselors participate in an extensive orientation. The orientation typically occurs a week prior to the new semester starting and provides an overview of the agency’s policies and procedures, and a review of ethical / legal issues and responsibilities. Each week practicum counselors receive at least one hour of individual supervision, one hour of group supervision, and one hour of case consultation. Practicum counselors are matched with senior staff members who supervise their work throughout the placement. Audio and/or video recording of all client sessions is required. Review of the tapes is an important component of supervision.
Terms of Placement
To allow for continuity of treatment for clients, the practicum involves a 9 to 12 month commitment beginning in August or January. The SIUE Counseling Services Practicum Program requires approximately 20 hours per week to include time for direct client contact, supervision and documentation. Please note that your academic program may require more hours. The practicum experience does not offer a stipend.

Graduate coursework in basic counseling and interviewing skills

To ensure fairness to all interested parties, Counseling Services staff will review the applications and selected candidates will be invited to an interview day. In the event that a selected practicum student resigns, the placement may be offered to another qualified candidate.
