In Response to Recent Shooting Tragedies

To the SIUE Community:

Counseling Services staff share the feelings of shock, anger, and deep sadness in response to the tragic shootings of African American men and police officers over this past week.  As the events unfold we extend our services to anyone who may want a place to express their thoughts and feelings about these traumatic events.  Responses to the tragedies might include feelings of hopelessness, disconnection, anger, grief, confusion, or changes in motivation.  Physical reactions could include changes in sleep patterns or appetite, headaches, stomach-aches, or increased tearfulness.  These sorts of reactions are very common and normal responses to the kind of trauma that we have all witnessed in regards to the recent shootings.  At the same time, the types of emotional and physical reactions are unique to the individual, so students are encouraged to be in tune with changes in their feelings and behaviors.  We at Counseling Services are also aware that these events may increase feelings of vulnerability for the African American community in particular, and we are here to help.  You may reach out for assistance by calling our office at (618) 650-2842 or stopping by Counseling Services (room 0222 on the lower level of the Student Success Center) 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Counselors are available for individual or group counseling, crisis intervention, consultations, and outreach presentations.

Counseling Services stands in solidarity with all those facing oppression as we work toward a just and fair society for all.

Sincerely,

SIUe Counseling Services
