Fall 2012 Counseling Groups

When you arrive at the Counseling & Health Services reception area please inform the individual working the front desk that you are there for one of the groups and then wait in the reception area. The facilitator will come and get you when the group is ready to begin.

If you have any questions, would like more information, or need to set up a group screening please call 618-650-2842 and press 1.

Survivors of Silence - Megan Denton, M.A.

  • This is a support group for male and female survivors of sexual violence.
  • The group will focus on providing support, empathy and insight from other survivors, developing healthy coping skills, fostering a sense of empowerment and helping members to regain a sense of control and safety within their lives.
  • Those interested in group membership will be required to attend a group screening.
  • Meets every week for 90 minutes in the Counseling & Health Services Conference room.

Women of Color Empowerment – W. Irene Summers Temple, Ph.D.

  • The Women of Color Empowerment Group is a six week group for female students of color.
  • It explores gaining independence, understanding identity, decision making, lifestyle choices, and assertive communication.
  • Meets every week for 90 minutes in the Counseling Services Assessment room.

Powerful Minds – Michael Kessler, Psy.D.

  • The group provides education about one’s thought processes, support in dealing with life stressors, and guidance in how to transform distorted patterns of thinking.
  • Members can also expect to improve their overall well-being through learning a variety of relaxation techniques.
  • It is open to any enrolled SIUE student seeking to understand and harness their brainpower, improve their mood, and increase effectiveness in the many realms of life.
  • Meets every week for 90 minutes in the Counseling & Health Services Conference room.

Healthy Relationships & You – Jessica Ulrich, LCSW

  • This is a six week group that provides education about healthy and unhealthy aspects of relationships.
  • Members will learn ways to improve their interactions with others by exploring communication styles and increasing assertiveness.
  • Meets every week for 90 minutes in the Counseling Services Assessment room. Note: This group is not meeting during the Spring 2013 semester.

Open Door - W. Irene Summers Temple, Ph.D.

  • A confidential support group for LGBT students.
  • Discuss, explore, and receive support surrounding issues pertinent to LGBT students. 
  • Meets in the Student Success Center.
