Apply for Student Speaker

For each Commencement, one student is awarded the honor of representing the graduating class and delivering remarks. The student speaker will be recognized at a special reception for honorees and guests. During the ceremony, the student speaker will be an official member of the platform party and will be seated on stage in full academic regalia.

A student speaker is selected for each ceremony.  The student speaker will be a graduate of one of the schools participating in that particular ceremony.

The content of the student address should be relevant, uplifting and memorable for the students and guests at the ceremony. The student speaker should reflect on his or her academic experience at SIUE and the University’s mission, vision and values. The student address should be personal and sincere, but the overall message should be universal and relatable.

Application Process

To be considered for selection as the student speaker at the Commencement, submit the following application materials.

• Letter of interest (please include your student ID number and degree program)
• Outline of your proposed speech
• Two letters of recommendation from SIUE faculty members
• A current copy of your resumé including:
  • academic accomplishments, involvement or recognition/honors;
  • involvement in student organizations, committees or boards;
  • scholarships/awards;
  • volunteer work;
  • research or unique student opportunities.
    

All application materials should be submitted for consideration at least 7 weeks before Commencement.
