Co-operative Education (Co-op)

Why should I do a co-op or internship?
Co-ops and internships give you the opportunity to receive "hands on" experience in your field of study. There is the possibility that the Co-op or internship would lead to a full-time job after graduation. Most employers are looking to hire graduates who had relevant work experience while they were in college.

Do I get academic credit for a co-op?
No, Co-op is zero credit with transcript recognition and full-time enrollment status.

How do I register for the co-op class?
Contact our office and someone from the Career Development Center will register you. Also, get your resume critique and complete the online Co-op and Internship Orientation

On-Campus Interviews

How do I sign-up for an on-campus interview?
First, you must be registered with the office and your resume must be approved and uploaded. Login to your account and click on "Schedules". Next, click on "Qualified Schedules", which allows you to sign up ONLY for those interviews in which you qualify.

I have an on-campus interview with a company, where do I go for the interview?
Report to the Career Development Center located on the lower level of the Student Success Center, Room 0281.

I think I qualify for this schedule, but it does not let me sign up. Why?
There are several reasons why this may happen. Please contact our office for assistance.

Is it appropriate to contact an employer after an interview?
Yes, it is appropriate to follow-up and find out the status of the hiring process. It is NOT appropriate if you are interviewing for a Co-op, unless otherwise allowed by the employer.

Professional Documents

Is there someone who can look over my resume?
Yes, you can schedule an appointment to have a counselor review your resume. Be sure to bring in a hard copy of your resume because we do not allow outside disks. We DO NOT write the resume for you, rather we offer suggestions for improvement.

Do I have to put my GPA on my resume?
It is not required, but if you choose to do so, we recommend that it be at least a 3.0 or higher. However, if you are majoring in accounting, it is strongly recommended.

How long should my resume be?
One to two pages maximum.

How many references should I have?
The standard is three, but always refer to the job announcement for clarification.

Should I put my references on my resume?
No, your references go on a separate document. The only exception to this is if you are applying for a teaching (primary or secondary education) position, in which case your references go on your resume.

Do I have to do a cover letter?
Whenever you apply directly to an employer you should ALWAYS include a cover letter. You do not always need a cover letter for Co-ops, on-campus interviews, or career fairs. You do not need to upload a cover letter on Cougar Jobline. If you find a job on Cougar Jobline that you want to apply for then you would submit a cover letter along with your resume.
