When is the Career Development Center open?
During the Fall and Spring semesters, we are open on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 pm and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 pm. We do not have evening hours during breaks and summer.
Do you have a list of companies coming to the Career Fair?
Yes, if you are registered with the office. Login to your Cougar Jobline account and click on “Career Events”. If you are not registered with the office, then you can access the information through a “Guest Login”.
Do I need an appointment to meet with a career counselor?
Yes, it is the best way to ensure that you get the appropriate amount of time you need.
Will a Career Development Center representative speak to my organization or club?
Yes, we are available to give a wide variety of presentations related to career development. Please call to get one scheduled.
Does the Career Development Center place me into a job after graduation?
No, we are not a placement office. However, we can provide you with various job searching tools and strategies.
Can someone help me fill out my application to graduate school?
Yes, we do assist students with the application process.
What is Cougar Jobline?
Cougar Jobline is the Career Development Center's online career portal, where Co-operative Education (Co-op), Internships and career positions are posted exclusively for SIUE students and alumni. Cougar Jobline is also your source for signing up for On-Campus Interviews, scheduling to attend our Career Events and much, much more.
How do I find an on-campus job?
Cougar Jobline does not list on-campus jobs. If you are needing a job on campus please refer to www.siue.edu/studentemployment.
How do I put my resume on the Cougar Jobline?
From the Career Development Center’s homepage, click on “Cougar Jobline” and follow the instructions for registering with our office. After you complete your registration, you will be prompted to upload your resume.
How often should I update my profile?
We suggest you review and make any necessary changes to your profile every semester.
I just want to look at jobs. How do I do this?
It is strongly recommended that you first be registered with the office through Cougar Jobline. Once you logon to your account, you will be able to search for jobs. If you choose not to register with the office, then you can look at jobs through a “Guest Login”.
I found a job I want on Cougar Jobline. How do I apply for the job?
Follow the employer’s instructions for applying, which can be found in the job announcement. For a Co-op position, you need to contact the Career Development Center office for a referral.
How current are the job postings on Cougar Jobline?
We receive and post jobs on a daily basis.
Why should I do a co-op or internship?
Co-ops and internships give you the opportunity to receive “hands on” experience in your field of study. There is the possibility that the Co-op or internship would lead to a full-time job after graduation. Most employers are looking to hire graduates who had relevant work experience while they were in college.
Do I get academic credit for a co-op?
No, Co-op is zero credit with transcript recognition and full-time enrollment status.
How do I register for the co-op class?
Contact our office and someone from the Career Development Center will register you. Also, get your resume critique and complete the online Co-op and Internship Orientation
How do I sign-up for an on-campus interview?
First, you must be registered with the office and your resume must be approved and uploaded. Login to your account and click on “Schedules”. Next, click on “Qualified Schedules”, which allows you to sign up ONLY for those interviews in which you qualify.
I have an on-campus interview with a company, where do I go for the interview?
Report to the Career Development Center located on the lower level of the Student Success Center, Room 0281.
I think I qualify for this schedule, but it does not let me sign up. Why?
There are several reasons why this may happen. Please contact our office for assistance.
Is it appropriate to contact an employer after an interview?
Yes, it is appropriate to follow-up and find out the status of the hiring process. It is NOT appropriate if you are interviewing for a Co-op, unless otherwise allowed by the employer.
Is there someone who can look over my resume?
Yes, you can schedule an appointment to have a counselor review your resume. Be sure to bring in a hard copy of your resume because we do not allow outside disks. We DO NOT write the resume for you, rather we offer suggestions for improvement.
Do I have to put my GPA on my resume?
It is not required, but if you choose to do so, we recommend that it be at least a 3.0 or higher. However, if you are majoring in accounting, it is strongly recommended.
How long should my resume be?
One to two pages maximum.
How many references should I have?
The standard is three, but always refer to the job announcement for clarification.
Should I put my references on my resume?
No, your references go on a separate document. The only exception to this is if you are applying for a teaching (primary or secondary education) position, in which case your references go on your resume.
Do I have to do a cover letter?
Whenever you apply directly to an employer you should ALWAYS include a cover letter. You do not always need a cover letter for Co-ops, on-campus interviews, or career fairs. You do not need to upload a cover letter on Cougar Jobline. If you find a job on Cougar Jobline that you want to apply for then you would submit a cover letter along with your resume.
Is there a test I can take that will tell me what I should major in?
No, but we do offer various assessments that will help you better understand yourself and assist you in exploring your career options.
What is the purpose of the Myers-Briggs?
It is an assessment used to identify your personality and how that fits into the world of work.
