Chris Sobrino - O'Fallon, Ill.
Chris Sobrino is a sophomore at SIUE, and after just a few months as a college student he has already formed a deep connection with the University, the campus and his friends. He was born and raised in nearby O’Fallon, Ill., and although living at home and commuting to school was an option for Chris, he says he is so glad he chose to live on campus instead.
For Chris, the nature of SIUE’s campus is something that is continually rewarding. “Walking from Prairie Hall to class every morning is one of my favorite parts of the day.”
Chris and his friends take advantage of the outdoors as much as possible when they are looking for fun, too.
“Some of the most fun times have been when my friends and I have started an impromptu Frisbee game or snowball fight while we were just hanging out on campus,” said Chris. “I feel like I would be missing out if I wasn’t here.”
For Chris, college life isn’t all fun and games. He and his fellow Meridian Scholars work hard to maintain the level of achievement that got them where they are today.
“Being a Meridian Scholar makes me feel proud of my hard work,” said Chris. “All those years of studying finally paid off in a big way.”
Through the Meridian program, Chris has had many special opportunities, including meeting with Chancellor Vandegrift and getting assigned a mentor in his field of study, accountancy.
“I’ve gotten so much good advice from my mentor, Accounting Professor Brad Reed,” said Chris. “I plan to get my CPA and hopefully work for a major firm in the area, and I know that I can always go to him with questions.”
Chris was initially impressed by SIUE because of the School of Business’ AACSB International accreditation, but once he came to campus he realized there is even more to SIUE.
