Project Management Concentration

Students in the MBA and M.S. CMIS programs now have the option of pursuing a concentration in project management. This concentration equips future business leaders and information technology professionals with an understanding of the fundamentals of project management and exposure to areas of key interest to project managers such as project risk, procurement, quality management, and change management. Coursework addresses many of the concepts covered in the project management certification exam administered by the Project Management Institute.

The coursework in the concentration balances theoretical concepts with applied exercises and cases. Students have the opportunity to apply project management concepts and processes in a "live" project. These experiences enable the student who concentrates in project management to emerge with a much better understanding of the dynamics and challenges associated with projects, as well as effective practices for managing them.

To complete the project management concentration, students in the MBA and M.S. CMIS programs select the following 12 hours of coursework as electives toward their program requirements. (Note: since CMIS 540 is part of the M.S. CMIS program core, those students must select the remaining nine hours of coursework as electives in their program.)

CMIS 540 Project Management Fundamentals and Best Practices (3 CH) Theory and techniques for managing projects within constraints of time, functionality, and resources. Topics include project initiation, planning, executing, controlling, and closing. Prerequisite: Student in MBA or MS CMIS program.

CMIS/MGMT 535 Project Management Standard Processes (3 CH) A framework of standard project management processes based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge® and other resources. Includes processes for managing scope, time, quality, cost, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement. Prerequisite: CMIS 540 or consent of instructor. Note: If the student already holds the PMP certification, an elective could be substituted.

CMIS/MGMT 536 Procurement Management in Projects (1.5 CH) Provides in-depth examination of the role of procurement management in projects. Develops understanding of strategies for successful supplier evaluation, source selection, contract administration, and communication management. Prerequisite: Student in MBA or MS CMIS program.

CMIS/MGMT 537 Project Risk Management (1.5 CH) Provides in-depth examination of risk management in projects. Develops knowledge of risk identification, risk analysis, risk response planning, risk control strategies, and the use of analytical tools for creating risk management plans. Prerequisite: MS 502 or equivalent.

One of:

MGMT 551 Managing Organizational Change and Innovation (3 CH) Knowledge and skills of organizational change with emphasis on diagnostic skills necessary for effective management of planned organizational change. Individual and group leadership approaches. Prerequisite: MGMT 514.

MGMT 553 Seminar in Quality and Performance Management (3 CH) Current topics in management, with special emphasis on designs, programs and techniques for managing quality and performance improvements. Advanced readings and cases on innovative business practices. Prerequisite: MGMT 514.
