Rebecca Vanderweel's decision to enroll in the SIUE MMR program was an easy one. After being referred to the program by her undergraduate professors at Missouri State University and doing some research, the Kearney, Mo., native sent in her application. "I knew I wanted a career in marketing research," Vanderweel said. "I looked at other programs across the country, but the SIUE MMR internship program won me over."
Not only was the internship program the deciding factor for her to attend SIUE, Vanderweel said that the combination of class work and her internship with GfK Kynetec in St. Louis has been the most rewarding part of the program. "Being able to apply what I am learning in the classroom to a real-world setting has been invaluable," she said. "You can read a textbook, listen to a lecture and do an example problem, but it's not the same. Applying your new knowledge to a real situation, a real project and a real client has been extremely beneficial."
In addition to appreciating her internship experiences, Vanderweel praised the SIUE MMR Advisory Board for their interaction with the students. "MMR Advisory Board members are industry experts from a wide range of businesses that span the United States," she said. "Our interaction with them has given us a true industry perspective, and they have always provided us with honest information about what they are looking for out of new graduates. It's a great partnership."
Vanderweel graduated in August 2012.
