Introduction

Dr. Giacobbe Portrait

I am pleased to introduce you to the Management and Marketing Department at SIUE. In my opinion, there is no greater purpose for a department in a school of higher learning than to deliver high-quality, relevant educational services to all its students. The ability to achieve this purpose depends on three critical components: a highly motivated, dedicated and well-trained faculty; well-designed, challenging programs of study; and highly-qualified and hard-working students who demand excellence from themselves and others.

Our core faculty is a special group of very talented educators, academically trained at top-tier universities nationwide. It is a faculty whose members have received teaching excellence awards and recognitions and is one that actively engages in research and publication in well-respected journals. Most faculty members leverage real-world business experience and consulting expertise to enhance classroom learning. I invite you to learn more about each of our faculty members.

The Department offers courses that serve programs both within and outside the School of Business. Several non-business disciplines (e.g., Kinesiology, Construction, Speech Communication) require specific management and marketing courses for minor fields or as program requirements. Primarily, however, the Department offers courses in support of three degrees: the BSBA (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration), the MBA (Master in Business Administration) and the MMR (Master of Marketing Research). The BSBA provides undergraduate students opportunities to specialize in five areas: general management, marketing, human resource management, entrepreneurship, and international management. The MBA is a comprehensive graduate program that allows students flexibility to concentrate on areas of management and marketing well-suited to their needs. The MMR is a nationally recognized and highly specialized program geared toward aspiring marketing researcher professionals.

Students in the School of Business are characterized by a strong work ethic and the determination to develop skills that enhance their career opportunities in an ever-changing workplace. Students find opportunities to develop and sharpen their marketing and managerial skills through means that extend well beyond course content. Courses that emphasize active-learning methods, group processes, critical thinking and analysis, and written and oral communication skills development help hone such capabilities. Participation in corporate-sponsored internships, study abroad program, and either of two highly acclaimed student organizations (American Marketing Association and Society for Human Resource Management) assist with students’ professional development.

I invite you to explore our Department, School and University websites in greater detail. If you are considering application to one of our programs, please contact our advisement staff for information. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
