Students may choose to pursue an MBA degree with a specialization in management information systems (MIS). The MBA/MIS specialization is an advanced professional degree that combines management skills with the study of information systems analysis and design. The program is designed to develop the student's ability to formulate and implement management information systems that will promote the achievement of the goals and objectives of the organization. Emphasis is placed upon the theory of information systems analysis and the modeling of the decision-making process in designing effective information systems.
Through the choice of elective courses in the MIS emphasis area, students can combine the study of management information systems with application to a specific discipline. Courses within the program are modified frequently to keep pace with changes in employer expectations and developments in information systems. Students who complete this degree are qualified for positions such as advanced systems analysts, supervisors of computer and data processing centers, and managers of information centers.
Program content balances theory with applications through case studies and projects that emphasize the effectiveness of organizational information systems in achieving the objectives for which the systems are designed. Factors such as the organizational structure and information requirements are studied within the context of ethical, economic, and socio-technical factors that affect the design of systems.
Some of the elective courses assume that students have an appropriate undergraduate computing background or comparable business experience in the computing field. Students are responsible for ensuring that their background is appropriate to the electives selected through consultation with School of Business advisers.
The specialization comprises a total of 15 credit hours of CMIS courses. CMIS 526 (from the program requirements) will be used as three credit hours for the specialization and the remaining credit hours must be chosen from the list below. No more than two of the courses selected may be at the 400-level. Course descriptions are provided below, but you must check the current prerequisites in the online catalog through CougarNet.
CMIS 528 - MANAGING TECHNOLOGY. (3 credit hours) Application of systems models to improve manager's ability to identify, understand, control, evaluate, plan, acquire, and use technology.
CMIS/MGMT 535 - PROJECT MANAGEMENT STANDARD PROCESSES. (3 credit hours) A framework of standard processes based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge® and other resources. Includes processes for managing scope, time, quality, cost, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement.
CMIS/MGMT 536 – PROCUREMENT MANAGEMENT IN PROJECTS. (1.5 credit hours) Provides in-depth examination of the role of procurement management in projects. Develops understanding of strategies for successful supplier evaluation, source selection, contract administration, and communication management.
CMIS/MGMT 537 – PROJECT RISK MANAGEMENT. (1.5 credit hours) Provides in-depth examination of risk management in projects. Develops knowledge of risk identification, risk analysis, risk response planning, risk control strategies, and the use of analytical tools for creating risk management plans.
CMIS/MGMT 540 – PROJECT MANAGEMENT FUNDAMENTALS AND BEST PRACTICES. (3 credit hours) Theory and techniques for managing technology projects within constraints of time, resources, and functionality. Topics include project initiation, planning, executing, controlling, and closing. Prerequisite: admission into any graduate program in business.
CMIS 557 - ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING. (3 credit hours) The role of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software in the e-Business environment will be explored using SAP. A risk management approach will be emphasized.
CMIS 563 - SQL-PL/SQL. (3 credit hours) Query language (SQL) and procedural language-SQL (PL/SQL). Database structures and storing, retrieving, and manipulating data in relational databases. Covers PL/SQL blocks of application code.
CMIS 564 - DATABASE DESIGN. (3 credit hours) Enterprise-wide data modeling. Conceptual database design, entity-relationship, and object-oriented models. Physical database design, relational model, and normalization theory.
CMIS 565 - ORACLE DATABASE ADMINISTRATION. (3 credit hours) Seminar in Oracle Database Administration including database creation, maintenance, backup, recovery, and user account administration.
CMIS 570 - SOFTWARE SYSTEMS DESIGN. (3 credit hours) Techniques and tools for information systems analysis and design. Process-oriented modeling and structured design concepts and techniques, re-engineering business processes, quality-assurance and reliability.
CMIS 588 - SEMINAR IN COMPUTER MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS. (3 credit hours) Current issues; content varies. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours provided no topic is repeated.
A maximum of two 400-level electives may be used. They must be printed in the Graduate Catalog, and you must meet any prerequisite(s).
