New Metro East Data from BLS

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the latest data from its Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. This is a treasure trove of information about labor markets for each county in the US. The latest data describe the situation as of the fourth quarter of 2016 (October, November, and December).

Here are some of the headline numbers for the Metro East:

Compared with December 2015, Madison County shows an employment increase of 2.2% (about 1,830 jobs), but a 4.8% decrease in average weekly wages (from $874 to $832).

During the same time period, St. Clair County shows an employment increase of 3.5% (about 2,604 jobs) and a 10.8% increase in average weekly wages (from $704 to $780).

Looking deeper into the data, hospitals and warehousing continue to be important industries in Madison County. General medical and surgical hospitals is the second most important industry in terms of both employment and total wages paid. Warehousing and storage is number three in terms of both employment and wages. Restaurants and other eating places is number one in terms of employment and number five in terms of wages. Legal services is number thirteen in terms of employment, but is the top industry in terms of total wages paid.

Restaurants and hospitals play an important role in St. Clair County as well. As in Madison County, restaurants and other eating places is the number one industry in terms of employment and number five in total wages paid. General medical and surgical hospitals is the number two industry in terms of employment and is the top industry in total wages paid. Other general merchandise stores (which includes, for example, super centers) is number three in terms of jobs.
