The human resource management (HRM) specialization provides students with the general and technical knowledge and skills for entry-level positions and careers in the personnel or human resource management function of organizations. Courses emphasize both the general theory of HRM, the expanding role of HRM in organizational effectiveness, the development and effective use of human resources in organizations, and the technical areas of selection, compensation, labor relations, training and performance appraisal. The specialization prepares students for professional careers in a wide variety of organizations.
The business administration degree with a HRM specialization curriculum is aligned with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) guidelines. This alignment assures students interested in a career in HRM are well prepared with a curriculum that emphasizes strategy, staffing and retention, and performance management, including total compensation, appraisal, training and development, and worker safety. In addition, students will also learn about the functional areas of modern business and the ethical and global issues confronting business today. Practice in making decisions using quantitative and analytical skills are complemented with leadership and team building skills as well as co-curricular activities.
Graduates of the program are qualified for careers in a variety of business firms, the non-profit sector and government agencies. In this extremely competitive economy, it is more important than ever to understand how staffing, training and developing employees can increase the competitive edge of all companies, non-profits and government agencies. SIUE graduates typically obtain entry-level HRM positions at large and small companies, as well as school districts and colleges. Students are strongly encouraged to gain professional experiences through co-operative education, internships and other co-curricular activities prior to graduation.
