The economics specialization provides students with the knowledge of analytical methods for solving basic problems affecting profit and growth of a business organization. In addition, economics offers courses that are fundamental to forecasting, planning and budgeting.
The business administration degree with an economics specialization will prepare you to be a business professional who understands the environment in which businesses operate and analyzes how economic principles impact business operations. You will learn about the functional areas of modern business, the ethical and global issues confronting businesses today, and the economic, social, political and legal environments in which business decisions are made. Practice in making decisions using quantitative and analytical skills is complemented with leadership and team-building skills. The curriculum is delivered using a variety of methods including analysis of business cases and other experiential exercises, as well as co-curricular activities.
Graduates of this program are qualified for careers in administration and management of business firms, banking and insurance companies, and federal, state and local government agencies. In this extremely competitive economy, it is more important than ever to strategically analyze the economy to understand the environment in which businesses operate. SIUE graduates have been successful in obtaining positions in a variety of financial services companies including Edward Jones, State Farm Insurance and Northwestern Mutual, in addition to local, regional and national banks, including TheBANK of Edwardsville, US Bank and Regions Bank. Graduates have also accepted positions in government agencies. Students are strongly encouraged to obtain professional experience through co-operative education, internships and other co-curricular activities prior to graduation.
