The management information systems (MIS) specialization is designed to prepare students to work in a variety of computing technology capacities which support the tactical and strategic goals of organizations. Students learn to design information systems which support decision making, business operations and functional areas within organizations. The design process includes the specification of hardware, software and personnel requirements.
The business administration degree with a MIS specialization will prepare you to be a business professional who understands the value of information and how organizations manage and use information to achieve goals. You will learn about the functional areas of modern business, the ethical and global issues confronting businesses today, and the economic, social, political and legal environments in which business decisions are made. Practice in making decisions using quantitative and analytical skills is complemented with leadership and team-building skills. The curriculum is delivered using a variety of methods including analysis of business cases and other experiential exercises as well as co-curricular activities.
Graduates of the program are qualified for careers in a variety of administrative and managerial positions in business firms, the non-profit sector, and in federal, state and local government agencies. In this extremely competitive and technologically-driven economy, it is more important than ever to understand how information is stored, retrieved and analyzed in order for organizations to remain competitive and achieve goals. SIUE graduates have been successful in obtaining positions at a variety of companies including Monsanto, Express Scripts and Edward Jones.
