Chancellor's Update: Budget and Tuition Rates

The State of Illinois has not yet approved a budget for FY13. We continue to hope that the Governor's Recommended FY2013 Budget, which contains funding levels for SIUE's state appropriation that are nearly the same as this year's FY12 Budget, will be approved. However, the University Planning & Budget Council (UPBC) has prepared budget planning scenarios which would accommodate various levels of budget reductions. All of the budget-planning scenarios currently developed by UPBC include provision for a 2.5% FY13 salary increase for unrepresented employees. A salary increase in FY13 would require approval by the SIU Board of Trustees. Also, Performance-based Funding will be introduced as part of our budget process beginning in FY13.

Regarding the FY12 Budget, as of 4/4/12, the State owes SIUE $13.6 million, which is 21% of SIUE's total FY12 state appropriation. We anticipate receiving the remainder of the FY12 state appropriation funds by December 2012. This amount is considerably lower than the $32.6 million owed to SIUE at this time last year.

At its May 10 meeting, the SIU Board of Trustees will consider a recommendation for a 4.8% increase in the undergraduate tuition rate charged to newly entering students, as well as a 3% increase in mandatory student fees.
