Students and Teachers As Research Scientists

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville became the first Illinois institution to participate in the STARS (Students and Teachers As Research Scientists) program during the summer of 2008.

This program is coordinated through the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and allows inquisitive high school juniors and seniors to explore research with scientists in laboratories and field sites during a six-week summer period. Students write formal research papers and make oral presentations at the end of the program. Participating institutions in addition to SIUE include the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Washington University, and Saint Louis University, along with the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center. The program receives additional funding from Pfizer, Inc. and Solutia Inc.

Three students were on the SIUE campus this past summer participating in the STARS program. Emma James and Hassan Yasin worked in Dr. Faith Liebl's lab in Biological Sciences, while Jack Linshi worked with Dr. Ron Worthington in the School of Pharmacy. Additional support was provided by Diane Hudson and Juliet Kerico, science and health science librarians with the Lovejoy Library.

SIUE had a successful debut in the STARS program. Ms. James' paper, "Regulation of Glutamate Receptor Expression in Drosophila melanogaster" was selected as an outstanding paper in the life science area for the Pfizer Award for Excellence in Research. Congratulations, Emma! (pictured below in Dr. Liebl's laboratory)
