The SIUE Trumpet Ensemble was selected to perform at this year's International Trumpet Guild Conference in Harrisburg, PA. This ensemble was selected through a recorded audition process and was one of only a limited number of collegiate ensembles invited to perform at this year's conference.
The SIUE Trumpet Ensemble worked diligently with noted trumpeter Crispian Steele-Perkins from England on historical instrument performance. A component of the audition was the submission of works performed on natural trumpets. SIUE has 8 Naumann natural trumpets. This ensemble is only one of a handful of ensembles from universities in the Midwestern U.S. where instruction is offered on these instruments on such a large scale; consequently, this ensemble was asked to showcase - as part of their performance - music written for natural trumpet in addition to modern instruments.
Names of the trumpeters, in alphabetical order, are: Andrew Asadorian, Brian Birch, Matt Bittles, Nick Calza, Stephanie Collura, Colin Galvin, Christopher Gore, Rachel Gray, Krista Kearney and Adrian LePiquemodern. In addition to conducting the SIUE Trumpet Ensemble, Dr. John Korak also performed as a trumpeter at this conference.
Voice students from SIUE attended the St. Louis Chapter National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Competition at Missouri Baptist University. SIUE was represented by 15 of the Music Department's finest singers in the voice area.
There are 10 divisions in the competition which college students may enter. Of those divisions SIUE claimed first place in 6, and second place in 6, for a total of 12 singers chosen as winners. Nine of these singers were chosen from Marc Schapman's SIUE studio (5 first place and 4 second place). SIUE was by far the most awarded university in the St. Louis Chapter. There is clearly something wonderful happening in the voice area at SIUE.
