Summer 2014 Art and Design Classes

We are offering two-week sessions to provide a longer art-making engagement for students interested in the arts. Class size will be limited to 10-15 students for focused engagement and specific studio attention.

Elementary sessions will be taught by art education students and supervised by art education faculty. Middle school sessions will be taught by studio graduate students from specific art disciplines and adjunct faculty with experience in those disciplines. High school sessions will be taught by adjunct faculty, studio faculty or supervised by a studio graduate student with guest workshops by studio faculty.

Workshops

Grades 1-4: Must have completed Kindergarten
Grades 5-8: Must have completed 4th Grade
Grades 9-12: Must have completed 9th Grade

Telling Stories: Visual Narratives Outdoor Action Painting
Through the viewing and making of stories, students will learn about how the artists visually convey meaning. Encouraging physical movement, students will interact with the physical space on campus while creating dynamic paintings.

Middle School, Grades 5-8: Middle School, Grades 5-8:
Advertising, Art Nouveau and Chuck Sperry: Intro to Screen-Printing Intro. to Digital Photography
Students will learn the screen-printing process and design and print a collaborative mural and t-shirts while exploring art history. Students will learn how to take, manipulate and print photographs using their own digital camera.

High School, Grades 9-12: High School, Grades 9-12:
Zines:101 Self-Publishing a Creative Magazine Advanced Experimental Printmaking
Students will produce a Zine developed around content of their choosing. Zines are self-published printed works produced by creative people to convey ideas through words and images. Participants will create self-reflexive works in the new printmaking studio through Gelli plates, monotype, relief and drypoint processes.

Large-Scale Installations Printmaking: Personal Impressions
Students will investigate artists that work big and then work collaboratively to design and build unique works of art. Using non-toxic printmaking materials, students will investigate a variety of printing processes that result in multiple images.

Middle School, Grades 5-8: Middle School, Grades 5-8:
Earth-N-Vessels Wild with Wool and Other Textile Arts
Students will explore how clay can be both functional and personally meaningful from being dug from the earth to the final glazed piece. Students will explore a range of textile arts including felting, weaving, dyeing cloth, paper making and book arts.

High School, Grades 9-12: High School, Grades 9-12:
Hybrid Design: Mashing the Old with the New (Advanced) Advanced Ceramics
An exploration of 2-D and 3-D digital and traditional formats applicable to the commercial field as well as personal expression. Students will investigate the intersection of traditional and contemporary ceramics through the viewing and making of related artists/artworks.
Cost: $250 per session Cost: $250 per session


Exhibition
A public display of the work and a reception to celebrate the summer workshops is planned for August 1 from 5-7 p.m. at the Art & Design Building.
