Dr. Sorin Nastasia is an assistant professor of public relations in the Department of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. As a scholar and an instructor, he has tried to contribute to the articulation and dissemination of critical approaches to international communication. In this type of approach, discussing political, organizational and (inter)cultural communication in a society becomes a way to understand the ideologies in that particular society, or the relationships between the dominant and the dominated. For example, Sorin believes that it is important to research and teach how public relations have become a theory and a practice rather than how public relations function in theory and practice in the contemporary world.
Between 2003 and 2009, Sorin Nastasia taught Fundamentals of Public Relations, Public Relations Campaigns, Public Relations Practicum, International/Intercultural Communication, and Public Speaking, while pursuing a Ph.D. in Communication and Public Discourse, at the University of North Dakota. He recently earned his PhD degree in May 2010. He also contributed to the Center for Community Engagement, doing promotion campaigns and graphic design, and to the Housing Office, doing research, writing, and design for a history of housing buildings on campus between 1883 and 2009. Prior to his arrival to the United States, Sorin Nastasia earned a B.A. in Modern Languages and Literatures in 1995 and an M.A. in American Studies in 1997, both from the University of Bucharest, Romania, as well as an M.A. in International Relations from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest in 1999 and an M.A. in Public Relations at the National School of Political Studies and Public Administration in Bucharest in 2003. In his home country, Sorin worked as a counselor in the International Relations Department of the Ministry of Culture of Romania between 1997 and 2001, and as a counselor in the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Education and Research of Romania between 2001 and 2003.
Sorin Nastasia has presented his research on the role of U.S. public relations models in shaping French and Romanian public relations practices, on social corporate responsibility in Eastern Europe, on Eastern European identities in transition and in diaspora, and on youth issues in election campaigns, at conferences of the National Communication Association (NCA), the International Communication Association (ICA), the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR), and others. He received a Top Student Paper Award of the Public Relations Division of NCA in 2006, a Top Paper Award of the Visual Communication Division of NCA in 2008, and Top Paper Awards of the Theatre Division of NCA in 2007 and 2009. He is in the process of publishing several of these studies as journal articles.
Sorin is married to Diana Iulia and they have two daughters, Daria Victoria and Alexia Monica. He likes to travel, to get informed about current events, to listen to traditional music from various countries, to watch movies, to swim, and to play with his children.
