Zach Schaefer (Ph.D., Texas A&M University) teaches organizational communication and a variety of courses related to conflict management, leadership, and small group development within organizational contexts. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in communication from Saint Louis University and loves living and working back in the area. His primary research interests are the relationship between organizational action and structure, an investigation of how organizations and communities use mediation, and exploring innovative ethnographic research methods. He has presented at many academic and professional conferences, and his work has appeared in Management Communication Quarterly, The International Communication Association Handbook of Communication Ethics, and Communication Teacher. Dr. Z, as his students call him, has also worked in the field of trial litigation as a qualitative researcher. After researching and collaborating with attorneys and conflict management practitioners, he formed his own company to help individuals and organizations improve their conflict management skills: Mediation and Communication Solutions, LLC. Outside of teaching and scholarship, Zach loves giving back to the community and does so in a number of ways. He and his wife (Kizzy) are heavily involved with the Southampton Neighborhood Association and recently helped create a neighborhood garden. He also teaches inner-city youth at the St. Louis Youth Learning Center, as well as serves as a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sister program to a wonderful young man named Rodrick Brown. He particularly enjoys snowboarding, motorcycling, skydiving, and any other type of adrenaline rush. He looks forward to wrestling with his boxer Gizmo, barbequing and cooking with his wife, playing cards, and having strong coffee with good conversation.
