IF YOU HAVE NOT APPLIED FOR A MAJOR IN ANY DEPARTMENT: You must go to Academic Counseling and Advising to complete an Application for Major And/Or Minor Form.
IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY A DECLARED MAJOR IN A DIFFERENT DEPARTMENT: You must come to the office of the Department of Social Work, Peck Hall 1306, to complete a Major And/Or Minor Approval Form.
After completing either of the above forms your records will be forwarded to the Department of Social Work. At that time your records will be reviewed to determine if you meet the basic admissions requirement of two semesters of full time enrollment at any college or university with a GPA of 2.5 or better.
At this time you will be notified to set up an appointment with the undergraduate program director to complete the admissions process or be sent a letter stating that you have been denied admission to the Social Work major. If accepted, you will also be told to pick up a copy of the Social Work Handbook in the department office and to schedule a planning session with the undergraduate program director. An appointment sheet is on the department's office door, Peck Hall, room 1306.
The purpose of this meeting is to get to know you, answer any questions you may have about social work and the program at SIUE, complete your program planning, and determine if you meet the other admissions requirements. These are:
The ability to communicate thoughts and feeling clearly and effectively. An interest in working with people who are vulnerable or disadvantaged and who need help to deal effectively with their environment.
You will not be considered by us to be fully admitted to the major and will not be assigned to a faculty advisor until your program planning is completed and reviewed by the undergraduate program director.
Read the section of the Student Handbook on program requirements and program planning. Use the worksheets to do as much planning as possible beforehand. Work in pencil so you can make changes. Bring this material to the meeting.
The information necessary to evaluate your previous coursework must be made available to the undergraduate program director at least two working days before the program planning meeting.
If you have taken all your coursework at SIUE in recent years this can be retrieved by the office staff from the computer. Check to make sure everything we will need to plan your program is in the department office several days in advance of your meeting.
If you are transferring in ANY coursework for general education or the social work program make sure there is a transcript of this work and a transfer-in evaluation sheet. If this material is not there, you need to get it in time to be reviewed.
If you are re-entering SIUE after an extended absence, be sure transcripts of any work you want to have considered in planning are included in your materials. Be clear about your status with General Education requirements.
At the end of the program planning meeting you will be registered for the following term and be assigned to a social work faculty advisor.
