Chair's Message

Dr. Linda Markowitz

Welcome to Social Work at SIUE!

The Social Work department has incredible faculty that are motivated to help students become professionals.  We have both an undergraduate (BSW) and graduate program (MSW), each of which is fully accredited until 2020 by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Both the BSW and MSW programs average around 70-80 students, so we’re small enough to give students the attention they need.  We also have close relationships with many of the social service agencies in the region, and a large number of these agencies not only accept our students for field placements, but also hire them after graduation.

Our faculty are ambitious and motivated and love to include engaged students in their research.  Faculty research areas include such topics as geriatrics, health care, diversity and human rights, homelessness and disability studies. We also have a very strong clinical faculty, and are particularly proud of our simulated client program, student “actors” from outside the program are hired and trained to play the role of client in our lab settings.   That means our Social Work students are some of the most prepared students in the areas when they head off for their field experience.

We are excited that we have active student organizations too.  Check out our student organizations in the web-page and please consider becoming active in one of them.  Connecting with members of your cohort will not only bring you (perhaps unexpected) joy but will also be an integral network aiding in your success.

Feel free to tool around our site to learn more about our programs.   If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact the BSW director Dr. Jayme Swanke ( or our MSW director Dr. Jill Schreiber (

Thanks again for visiting our site, and if you’d like to come in for a personal visit, we’d like to meet you. The Social Work suite is located in 1306 Peck Hall.
