Bunches of Blankets
The Bunches of Blankets drive was held this fall and blankets were donated by the SSWA members (some were new and/or gently used) in early December. SSWA members collected donated blankets from friends, relatives, and/or purchased them new. They passed out approx. 60 blankets, either directly to the homeless or left them in the areas they are known to return to at night to sleep. They also gave blankets for distribution at the New Life Evangelistic Center which provides emergency shelter for homeless men, women and children. Thanks to all the donators for their contributions to help out where the need is great!
Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center Clothing Drive
The Jackie Joyner-Kersee Center is a part of the East St. Louis School District and is used for after school programs. This year SSWA collected clothing donations for children that attend the center.
Out of the Darkness Madison Co. Community Walk
The Out of the Darkness Community Walks are 3-5 mile walks taking place in over 250 communities across the country, with the proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to raise money for AFSP's vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and provide support for survivors of suicide loss. This year, SSWA along with the support of many generous contributors, raised $425 for this walk. Thanks to everyone who helped make this happen!
Holiday Gifts for Children
Since 1993, some 69 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have received shoe box gifts. It starts with filling a shoe box with toys, school supplies, and necessity items. The boxes are then transported to regional processing centers, are loaded onto ships and planes and sent to Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. This year the SSWA wanted to be a part of the tradition of making a child's holiday a special one.
