Timeline for Fall 2010 Matriculation*

In the Summer and Fall of 2009:

• Visit the Pre-Law Advising website at http://www.siue.edu/artsandsciences/politicalscience/

• Visit the Law School Admissions Council’s website at www.lsac.org to familiarize yourself with the application process and register for the September LSAT.

• Read through the most recent copy of the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) Registration and Information Booklet from the Pre-Law Advisor (Peck 3227), or the Department of Political Science (Peck 3234).

• Subscribe to the Law School Data Assembly Service (LSDAS) through the www.lsac.org website.

• After you register with LSDAS, you will need to submit transcript request forms from all undergraduate institutions you have attended.  These should be sent directly from the undergraduate institution to the LSAC.

• Register to attend a Law School Recruitment Forum.  The closest Forum to us is in Chicago.  You may find more information on the Law School Recruitment Forum at www.lsac.org

• Register for an LSAT preparation class or purchase a LSAT preparation book to fully prepare for the LSAT.  Also, keep an eye out for LSAT practice tests held at SIUE throughout the semester.

In the early Fall of 2009:

• Schedule a meeting with the Pre-Law Advisor (bharwar@siue.edu) to check in on your progress toward application.

• Identify the people from whom you are likely to request letters of recommendation. Speak with them and provide them with a copy of your resume, your personal statement, and your transcripts.  In addition, if you have done independent research, or completed significant written assignments in their courses, be sure to provide a copy of those materials as well so they have ample information to write the best letter of recommendation for you.

• Start working on your applications.

Fall Semester 2009 Midpoint:

• Give your recommenders all LSDAS forms necessary for them to craft the letters of recommendation they are writing on your behalf and provide them a rough date by which you’d like to have the letters submitted.

• Take the LSAT on Saturday, September 26.

• Request financial aid application materials from the schools to which you are applying.

• Obtain a copy of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Study Aid) application from the federal government, library, college financial aid office, or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

• Submit your applications!

• Or….if necessary, register for the December LSAT.

Late Fall, Early Winter 2009:

• Check in with your recommenders to confirm that they have mailed their letters of recommendation for you.

• Complete all financial aid forms and mail them.

• Complete any remaining law school applications, and mail them.

Spring Semester 2010:

• Review financial aid packages from schools offering you a space in their Fall class.

• Visit those institutions, especially if they have an “accepted student day” in the Spring.

• Decide which law school offer to accept, send in the necessary deposit, and CELEBRATE!

• Complete your student loan applications.
