Master of Public Administration at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

The Department of Public Administration and Policy Analysis offers the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree program. The MPA degree program is fully accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) and is one of the largest graduate degree programs at SIUE. Our program is unique in that it serves students who have the desire to attend full-time or part-time. We offer traditional and blended classes in the evenings as well as weekend classes.  Blended classes involve blending traditional classroom lecture and discussion experience with online course materials and assignments.  The program also offers totally online courses in which a student is not required to come to campus for any coursework.  This gives students a variety of choices to take core and elective courses.

Over 100 MPA candidates are currently enrolled in the program and take classes from faculty actively engaged in a variety of academic and applied public administration areas. MPA candidates at SIUE include both mid-career professionals and pre-career students desiring to enter the public or nonprofit fields. During the last 5 years, 50% of graduates attended the program part-time and completed the program within 5 years and 50% of the graduates attended full-time and completed the program within 2 years.

The department provides pre-career students with the opportunity to participate in a paid professional internship program. Interns are selected on a competitive basis and gain valuable career experience while earning the MPA degree. Recent interns have been placed in fields of municipal administration, policing, economic development, human resources, nonprofit administration, fundraising, information technology and community development. Intern placement opportunities exist in both Southwestern Illinois and the Greater St. Louis metropolitan region.

Mid-career students gain valuable skills that provide the opportunity for significant career development and advancement. The MPA Core program is designed to provide fundamental administrative training while the elective sequence allows students to construct an area of concentration specifically tailored to their career goals.
