Graduate Programs in Historical Studies

What You’ll Need to Apply

  1. Personal Statement: a 1-1.5 page letter in which you provide some background about yourself, why you’re interested in our program, why you think you would be a strong contributor to our program, and the names and contact information for two (2) academic references who can speak to your abilities as a historian (no letters of recommendation needed. We’ll contact references directly)

  2. Writing Sample: a 12-15 page piece of writing from a history class that you feel best demonstrates your capabilities as a writer and researcher

  3. Official transcripts from all institutions and for all degrees completed. (Unofficial transcripts will be accepted for application review, but official transcripts must be on file before you can be enrolled)

How to Apply

  1. Step One: Fill out a Graduate School Application and pay the application fee with the SIUE Office of Admissions

  2. Step Two: Please send an email to Robert Paulett, Graduate Program Director in History ( informing him of your application. If possible, please attach electronic versions of your personal statement, writing sample, and (if you choose, see below) unofficial transcripts for all degrees completed.

  3. Step Three: Mail hard copies of all application materials to: Office of Admissions, SIUE, Graduate and International Admissions, Campus Box 1047, Edwardsville, IL 62026-1047

  4. Note on electronic transmission of academic records: Transcripts are private records protected by law. Email is not a secure method of transmission. Please be aware that if you choose to email your unofficial transcripts to us, you will be waiving your right to secure transmission of official records. If you do not wish to do this, you may have your official records sent securely to our Office of Admissions.
